If we had truly wise leaders then they'd be able to balance the needs of protecting the populace without necessarily resorting to following the "1984" playbook. The security services have always called for more powers and it used to be the case that those powers were kept in check by our representatives, the people we elect.
Sadly it seems our elected representatives have little understanding of the technology or the implications of what the security services are doing.
