and I reckon they'd need to go with Samsung and 14nm to keep up with Exynos

Dont believe they 'need' to go with Samsung because if I remember rightly Samsung and GlobalFoundries made a deal to provide 14nm FinFet together so it may actually mean they will get their chips from Samsung and GF at the same time because of this.
Both just as good as each other and both use the same tech due to this.
I meant they need to go lower than 20nm like Samsung..if you get what I mean

AFAIK it is 14/16nm - it seems planar 20nm will be a fairly short-lived node. Vs 28nm at least.
