Looks like they are following CryENGINE - I wonder if the uptake of the new generation engines has been somewhat slow??
Re: Unreal Engine 4 moves from subscription to completely free
Free is always nice but it was hardly expensive before hand ($19 p/m). I can see this as more of a move to get people to learn it / play with it :)

"When you ship a game or application, you pay a 5% royalty on gross revenue after the first $3,000 per product, per quarter. It’s a simple arrangement in which we succeed only when you succeed."

Sounds like a great cost structure to me. Makes sense and is very simple.

In the long run, they'll probably make more money anyway...for really popular games, were they still only making the $19 p/m?

They used to charge $19 p/m and then 5% on sales. They have basically dropped the monthly sub.
Overall I guess it will even out and then eventually make them more money as the point was to get more people using it, to get more things made, to get more things sold, to get more 5% cuts :)
