There are plenty of games that require this much power to run that have a MUCH smaller footprint. And others that are a complete waste of space, on multiple levels. The last Wolfenstein, for example - over 60gb for a grand total of 5-6 hours of game time? I guess someone can try to justify this with a straight face.

The thing that gets me is that because tech is so 'inexpensive' anymore, people turn a blind eye to sloppy, unoptimized programming. Just another example of the throwaway world that's rapidly spinning out of control.
I knew I would get this kind of response. And I did consider that what it's like in my country, is only what it's like in my country. But I notice that a lot of English people post on this forum. So I figured it wouldn't be so irrelevant.. Anyway, why be mad that a game requires a certain amount of space? If that's what the game takes, then that's what the game takes! I'd hate for it to be chopped down with crappier textures and stuff, just to please those who have a DL cap. This was always marketed as something that was going to really push what games can do. Did anyone seriously expect it to be a 20GB DL? Lol....

And btw, wait until the game is out and you see what it has to offer. Then we'll talk about whether the DL size is unwarranted or not Consider that Gta V is around 50GB on the current gen consoles (PC version will likely be more). SC should have a lot more content than that in a way bigger universe...

When a 'program' is so large solely because the devs admit they are not doing any optimization, as someone that started *MY* PC gaming career on an Atari 400 with 64k of ram, then I tend to not so much get angry as I am annoyed. Doesn't matter what it offers - I won't devote my bandwidth to a 100gb download, and if it came on optical disks, I'd still probably be out of luck, because like a lot of people, I guessed against blue-ray and went with double-density. So that would be, at best, 26 DVD-5 format disks. Kind of like the old days of installing Win98 via floppy. Thanks - no. It's certainly not a matter of space. I'm up to 4tb, with a velociraptor as my primary. Not SSD, but certainly more than capable.

I hope those that get it will enjoy it. I wish the game and the devs well. But in that package, I won't be a buyer - and I don't seem to be the only one here. And while I might be incorrect, I think I'm the only loudmouthed 'murican in this particular thread - or at least only one actually posting from here.

In many parts of Kent you are lucky to even get 10MB/S unless you live close to an exchange or happen to have something like Virgin.

FFS,until 3 years ago I was on under 5MB/S! I used to buy discs when I could and if I didn't it would be at least 8+ hours for a 20GB download!

WoW has a decade of development in it, areas that are snow, desert, forest, underground etc each with different architecture. Several expansions of different item and armour models to texture wrap. There are places where people complain they have been lazy eg dragon A is just dragon B in blue not green but I think they are just making some effort to not let things go completely out of hand, because they know that would stop people playing.

One problem I have with WoW is that the download system assumes that you want to download a copy onto your machine, but in reality I have a copy on my laptop as well and then my wife, son and daughter want to play. Do that on SC and I am looking at a 500GB download for the 5 machines? Even on my fast, uncapped connection I think I am into point and laugh territory here.

For fresh install that isn't so bad, for major updates you need to faff about preserving settings and addons. It used to be better than it is now, but I don't think they are using torrent any more as the underlying transport.

I want a computer to do tedious work for me, not create more

Re: Star Citizen client download expected to be 100GB

I noticed a P2P option in the client, so presumably if you have a local network it'll take from the local computer that has it installed (just remember to raise the upload limit while your local computers are downloading).

That P2P option wasn't functional last time I checked. They said they had to buy some kind of licence to be able to do that, which just sounded stupid to me... Not that I didn't believe them... Is it actually functioning now? I haven't loaded the thing up since last year sometime..

I've no way of telling. The idea of them skimping because they would have to buy a licence makes me laugh with that budget though

In the days when the updater just used bittorrent to download a patch the p2p stuff worked great. These days they do things differently, and it doesn't seem to.

I'm actually concerned about their budget. I think they're probably gonna need a fair bit more to support this game long term. I plan on buying more things to support it once it comes out, and if I see that my current investment was worth it (Just a simple starter package).

    Same

I have no problem with 100gb or even 200gb of client data content for a quality AAA game, as long as I'm going to be seeing a lot of it most of the time (....). .
The only negative factor I can think of is that I may require an upgrade before the game's 2016 based release. And, really, with the timeframe being clear when I backed the project, I can't really complain.
Let's just hope everyone enjoys iit.
