It's very similar to the Titan X but with half the memory, say reports.

Hmmm, makes the recent Titan announcement seem even odder.

not really... this is going to perform just as well (or better depending on clocks) in pretty much every current game, 12GB isn't really needed and 6GB will cover most user needs. So logically nvidia put out the card that will empty people's wallets the easiest first :)

Exactly......a 980Ti makes sense, the Titan did not. Then announcing the 980Ti right after announcing the Titan?

it's business 101... the old titan had double floating point as a differentiating feature over the ti models (so targeted different users), this version doesn't so people aren't going to go and buy a titan if the ti will do the same job, they are the same card with different ram amounts. So stick the titan out first and sell it to those desperate for performance, then release the cheaper version. Not to mention yeilds etc will have improved so they can increase profit on each card lol.
And remember there's been no official announcement of the 980ti, this is literally no different to us saying there will be a 980ti in the titan thread.
Re: Reviews - Nvidia preparing GeForce GTX 980 Ti for post-summer launch
I'm looking to get a 980 to improve frame rates on my gtx 770 2gb but will probably be going for a EVGA card so if they do bring it out relatively soon I can use the step-up program and pay the difference to get a ti if and when it's launched.

It is like they don't know what AMD are coming up with next, so they spray out models to try and keep everything covered.
Latest rumour seems to be that AMD's Fiji will have a dual GPU layout for the 8GB variant, which implies a cheaper 4GB variant so let's hope it is cheap enough to get my interest.

But if that is the case, then a dual gpu with dual hbm could be *seriously* fast. After a few years of boring graphics updates this could get very interesting...

When the new line of AMD cards drop, Nvidia will finalise the specs for the 980 Ti so it matches or beats it by a tiny margin then releases it just to steal thunder

That's if they can. HBM is an unknown quantity right now.

More likely they will just say that instead of buying the AMD card you should wait for their HBM2 card to come out as that will be better.
Re: Reviews - Nvidia preparing GeForce GTX 980 Ti for post-summer launch
Almost seems to make the new titan x redundant already. Same card, less memory and cheaper ?? feel sorry for anyone who has gotten a titan x. :p
Re: Reviews - Nvidia preparing GeForce GTX 980 Ti for post-summer launch
I'm not sure I'll go for this. Yes it's cheaper than the Titan, but the Titan is expensive for a reason, for that sweet DP performance.
OH WAIT
Re: Reviews - Nvidia preparing GeForce GTX 980 Ti for post-summer launch
The 780 Ti beat the original Titan on performance for half the price. Its like the Titan range have more hp on paper but more weight so are disadvantaged
