Just waiting for the flood of am-radio fans to log in and bitch that PLE's are pretty much blanket spectrum jammers. I've got quite a few PLE's myself - all Devolo brand - mainly because the (Netgear powered!) wifi doesn't work too well in the house. In my case it's not concrete walls, but pipework that seems to be the problem. Although Netgear's routers - at least the ones I tried - don't have decent power. For example a titchy "wifi booster" can easily outperform the routers I had.
Back to the PLE's - don't know why they bother with the non-passthru models, as these seem to be a lot less flexible. Save on SKU's and drop 'em.
Wonder if Devolo will upgrade too? i have been using Devolo 500's for 3 years now--great pieces of kit
So that means the 1.2Gbps adapter is actually working at ~336Mbps. A far cry from the advertised speed.Quote:
In its own testing, transferring a single 500MB file via new PL1200 adaptors took just 12 seconds
and then they compare it to the 500Mbps model which transferred at ~88Mbps!!!
Wish they were made to quote realistic figures.
The theoretical figures from these devices have always been far higher than the actual throughput. I used to have some 80mbps devices and they rarely got over 20mbps in practice.
Cheaper than getting someone to route in ethernet cable through the house.
And then find you should have done fibre optics instead :)
I get around 80Mbps out of my 500AV units as well, but as that is across the circuit breaker board to the far corner of the house I am good with that. If I ever need more, getting >300Mbps might be interesting.
Devolo have had their 1200's out for a while (dLAN® 1200+), it'll cost about £120 for the two unit set (Maplin's cost, so Amazon might be a little cheaper). What gets me interested though is that Devolo also have a 1200 unit with an integrated 802.11ac setup (details here)
I moved from the "AV" spec ones (200Mbps) to the 650's and don't really see that much increase in speed - then again, I've got a mixed mode setup, so maybe that's causing issues. Other thing that irks me though is that the new Devolo units only have on/off LED's - whereas the older units had them for diagnostic info (and in the case of the AVsmart+'s - you got an LCD display). Maybe I'm old school but I like to see the lights flash when there's network activity.
I have those exact ones :) According to the devolo software mine are connecting between 400 and 600Mbps. I also have a set of TP link AV500 which they replaced, one of which is still currently use in the powerline network without issues.
I kinda get you, but they work really well and the Devolo software is awesome. Flashing status light is definitely a worthwhile sacrifice for these devices in my experience.
It's a similar over-boast to that of WiFi, I've not seen my AC1200 gear do over 20MB/s a few feet apart with just a floor between - so that's less than 20% of theoretical (still better than the 10% my old N gear could manage). I had some DLink 500Mb Homeplugs that got 300Mb on the same circuit, but fell to 80Mb through the board, so I could beat that with the AC1200. However now thinking of going back to Homeplug for the TVs as the biggest problem with most "Media Bridges" is that they are not transparent.
I guess they wont support Jumbo frames until they can guarantee you can get 1000Mbps?
Yes... obviously, full-duplex Ethernet can but it's not rated 2Gb or 200Mb because of that. What I didn't know until looking now is that Homeplug is half-duplex, however it's not fixed to 600Mb full-duplex, AFAIK in theory it is capable of transmitting at 1.2Gb in a single direction.
Anyway my point isn't that they need 10Gb Ethernet ports (no current homeplug is ever going to hit 1Gb Ethernet speed duplex or not) it's that the speed ratings are clearly a fantasy and they know it, it was highlighted more by the use of 100Mb ports on the 500Mb homeplugs but that situation is simply reoccurring as we head upwards, give at a few years and we'll probably have Homeplug AV5000 with a 1Gb port on and getting <50MB/s real speed.
I've tried them in adjacent sockets before, still nowhere near rated speed. They have a place and can be pretty useful but the marketing is getting a bit over the top.
For the guy asking about Devolo: Yes, they've been out a few months. They also have Powerline WAPs - which have 5GHz! :)
If the manufacturers could just admit they are lying about speed they could move back to a system where there is a set standard. So the speed on the box is achievable.
I did testing of so may power line adapters and I grew to find a strong dislike for the lies on the box.
If all the manufacturers moved to a new standard together it would be better for everyone.
