Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?
I will be upgrading. I'm currently running a 5 year old system and have planned an upgrade about this time. Skylake with a new socket comes at the perfect time for me and hopefully that socket will be relevant for a couple of years so I can upgrade just the CPU next time.
Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?
Yes, my old i5 760 is showing its age. Its running at 100% in some games (GTA V) and holding back my GPU.
Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?
Very good but not convenient till ddr3 wont be outdated.I have 4770k.
Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?
NO, Skylake will be around when Zen launches, even if Zen only matches Haswell, that will do nicely. after all why get something from a bunch of crook with bad attitude that will stop at nothing to suppress its opponents sales.

Even though it's currently underutilized, it might be nice to have the DDR4 (I know the new Z170 boards will also support DDR4) and the extra cores, especially with DX12 in play. Though from what I've read, DX12 is only making use of 4 cores right now, and any more is not needed.
There's also the option of saying **** it to both and going with the z97 and 4790K and just upgrading the whole deal down the line when more cores are actually important. But spending money on a dead end platform makes me feel uneasy. To clarify, I don't do any video editing or streaming, and I'm looking to build just a gaming PC. I realize more cores aren't needed right now, again, I'm just looking to sink some money and not have to potentially spend more sooner rather than later to upgrade, should we see better utilization of cores in the near future. But damn, things are feeling behind the times on that front.
Would be grateful for your thoughts!
New parts come in at the current price of parts, so buying now would really pee you off when you see better parts in a few weeks for same price.
If it's a gaming rig you're building I'd stay away from X99. Hell I'd stay away from i7 and just stick with i5, as there is simply no need to fork out the extra cash for a chip you won't utilize fully.
CPUs are so bloody good at the moment it's ridiculous. I'm using an i5 2500, the first i5 out, and I don't see me upgrading for at least another 3 years. I swap my GPUs every 3 years or so, normally by getting 2 of the x70 model (I had 2 470s, now I have 2 670s) but this time I'm going for a 980Ti as I want to game at 4K and the extra VRAM will come in handy for that - every card I've bought has stung me sooner than I'd like by not having enough VRAM.
Long story short wait a few weeks, use an i5, put your money into a strong GPU. Oh and when looking at SSDs, I'd really advise against PCIe based ones. SATA drives are half the price and in real world usage you just won't notice the speed difference, it's something you could only really see in benchmarks
Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?
Nope I already have an X79(i7 3820)and Xeon E3-1240 I'm good.. Time to work on software..
Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?
I'm on a age old Core 2 Duo E6700 and honestly Skylake can't come soon enough! Will probably get a 390 to go with it.
Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?
No too poor. My 3570 will have to do. I've not overclocked it yet so I can always squeeze a lot more performance out if it struggles...
Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?
Not for me. Just upgraded to a FX 6 core and happy with that. I suppose the grass could be greener on the other side but don't have the cash for it.
Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?
May consider upgrading to skylake. Had the i5 2500k since 2011 and have been wanting to do a 'fresh' rebuild for some time, however I am holding off as VR is finally here next year (already developing with the oculus rift :D) and my 7950 ain't cutting it, new gpu are out next year that will provide a great increase so I have set myself the aim to upgrade around the time AMD and Nvidia release the next gen, if I still feel the need to upgrade the cpu I will but honestly Zen from AMD has me interested as I would love to see a high end competitive chip from them and it looks like it has the potential to do so :P.
Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?
No, I upgraded to a 4790k last summer and don't plan on an upgrade until speeds are at least 1/4 faster at the same clock speeds.... or until my current setup dies !
Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?
Am I planning on upgrading to Skylake? No.
But I'm always thinking about an upgrade, my 3770k at stock is doing well for me, when I feel I need more I'll start by overclocking it first and then will look at an upgrade. I think I can wait for whatever Congress after Skylake it maybe whatever comes after that.
Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?
I think I'll wait for AMD Zen to come out with DDR4 support and USB 3.1.
Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?
Probably not unless something dies that isnt in warranty -.-. Unless they are doing over 8 cores variants at non silly pricing (~5930K levels) and then I might consider it.
Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?
no, i'm happy with what my 2500k can do. In a few years I'll consider upgrading when going 4k will be cheaper
Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?
I'm planning on replacing my b system Intel Q6600 with a skylake fresh build and turn my current main rig into my media pc(just switch the gtx card with a 760). Thinking seriously about Matx this time for portability .
