I think they're being officially released on the 5th August...

More of the same. Except for DDR4 support, not much changed? Any more PCIE lanes or USB3? Not even USB 3.1 ?? Do we add m.2 drives without losing 2 SATA ports? I think this one needs skipping unless you need a new PC

20 lanes PCI3 instead of 16 lanes for Haswell & Broadwell...USB3.1 will be on a lot of boards, but not integrated into the chipset. Most boards seem to have 2 M.2 slots...

More lanes sounds solid but I'm surprised the top end mainstream i7 is still only 4 cores

Four cores, but eight threads with hyper-threading. I suppose they want to keep the higher core market to the Haswell-E range...

That '20 PCIe 3.0 lanes' figure is for the Chipset (replacing the 2.0 lanes of Z97). The CPU itself still has 16x 3.0 lanes.

That is still the ideal configuration for most work, and therefore the best one to sell for mass market. Adding more cores would for most people add nothing but cost, unless it took away from cache or graphics. The majority market is laptops that use that integrated graphics, so Intel won't want to rob from there. The rest of us make use of the cache, so we don't want them to rob from there.

Transistors are getting smaller and lower power consumption with new nodes, but they are not getting cheaper like they used to so I only expect to see a jump up in core count when the cost is justified. It could be that Mantle/DX12/Vulkan will be the driver for that, or it might be that better use of 8 threads will make extra cores even less of an issue, that should be clear soon enough.

I'm looking forward to see the reviews and benchmarks - I've been waiting patiently for skylake and windows 10, as whether go for x99 platform with 5820K or the Z170 platform and 6700K.

It will be interesting to see the price points and performance vs the 5820k.

Re: Intel Skylake Core i7-6700K and i5-6600K packaging leaks online

I had no intention of upgrading any time in the next couple of years but the boss is offering me a good chunk of cash for my current rig so that it can be used purely as a work system.

As such I'm looking at a i7 K variant and new mobo, was leaning toward a current gen as I can re-use my G.skill ripjaws at 2133mhz (16gb) but will hold out till I see some benchies of the 6700k and ddr4 I think.

Not that I need either, I5 3570k @ 4.5ghz does me just fine currently tbh.

And those additional chipset lanes are very welcome!

Hmm. HD530 is likely to be GT3 without crystalwell at the best and rumours say GT2. I hope Intel does deliver GT4e on the desktop, it's potentially fast enough to be interesting.
