The clicking noise of mechanical keys is what's always made me want them. Damn it's a satisfying sound.. Does that sound dorky? Lol :P
I have always wondered what the o-rings do to quieten a keyboard anyway unless you are very heavy-handed? My MX Black keys are silent in operation, the only noise is when I release the keys, which o-rings wouldn't dampen.
Im lazy and bottom out all the time so my keyboards are noisy.
My ALPS based Mathias Mac keyboard is supposed to be noisy but.... its soooooo nice.
Silent mech keyboard......... Take my money :D
I kinda won in the end, my office in the spare room is now my 2nd childs room (lost that argument) and I now reside in the dining room so i can swear and shout along with WASDing to my hearts content :)
Its the feel and sound IMO, I have used mech boards for many years (started collecting them in the '90s) and no one ever complained about the noise, until they started to become a fashion / gamers object about 5 years ago.
The key caps do a lot to change and damp the noise, but they seem to be getting thinner and thinner every time a new style comes out.
All of my black cherry switched (new style and vintage) have always been pretty much silent, the main problem is when they have too light a spring weight (ie reds) because newer users tend to mash the keys down too hard and bottom out.
Years back a few of us thought that dental bands or fine o rings could help this out, but its best to just start with a standard weight blacks, or blues if you like the noise.
At one time I had them all and have since sold off all the reds because they feel the same as most 'dome boards.
I use my modded blues and browns the most and have always said to new users start with the blues.
i loved the click you got from a cherry switch, made me want them, i think silent whilst useful for some people, i feel the quality more hearing it
