USB 3.1 gen 1 is basically USB 3.0, and gen 2 is USB 3.1 proper. Yeah, it makes complete sense. :rolleyes:

And they have a bunch of consumery sounding names like Superspeed+ which specifically should NOT be used for packaging or consumer facing content - huh? From the marketing point of view USB3 looks like a complete mess. From a technology viewpoint it looks quite tasty though.

It's ok having the technology but it isn't being used by the masses still. It's still a gimmick.

Not particularly.
Just because right this second it's not hit mass adoption doesn't mean it won't in a year or two.
I'd make a good guess that most people keep their motherboard for several years.

It will only take off once USB 2 is actually replaced with USB 3, until then the consumers will buy what is put in front of them.

A lot of stuff which will actually benefit from USB 3 like hard drives and faster flash drives do already use USB 3, in fact it's pretty commonplace now and most PCs you can buy will have at least a couple of ports.

You missed my point. Stuff can benefit from higher speeds but it doesn't mean it is used or needed. The only time it will be of any use is when I buy a device that says in big writing on it, is not compatible with USB 2. Until then USB 3 and it's variants will be something only those in the know will make full use of.

Well speak for yourself - enthusiasts are moving on from 6Gbps SATA because it's too slow. M.2 with plenty of lanes is becoming a better storage interface. And before you say that's too new, I specified my computer 6 years ago to have plenty of PCI-E lanes because I wanted faster than SATA interface to storage.
But the comments about masses are a bit silly - if we standardised everything at the median level then we'd all be using XBOnes or something. The nice thing about PCs is that they are flexible, so you can have one person using them for office work, another for MD simulation, another for gaming, all with their different requirements which can be catered for by a range of specifications.
