Impressive. To be fanless, I assume it needs to be efficient and prevent power being wasted as heat. Looks like a few mandatory EU regulations (up yours Farage, I think this is a good thing ) are implemented :

ErP Lot 6 2013 - all PSUs to have no less than 50% efficiency under 100mA load in standby mode, at 230Vac input voltage

617/2013 - Enermax has a specific page about this - http://www.enermax.co.uk/eu-verordnung617-2013/ - but this new EDF550AWN isn't listed there yet.

Looks like the Platimax series are even more efficient. I wonder why they can't be fanless?

I doubt that EU reg has anything to do with it. At 100mA load the PSU could be 5% efficient, even assuming that's on the 12V line, that would only be 24W of heat to dissipate - easily within the bounds of a couple of medium-sized heatsinks.

The reason it can be fanless is because it remains efficient at high loads - much more relevant heat-wise than low loads.

Edit: Platinum rating means minimum of 91% efficient at 100% load (240V supply), so at 550W it needs to dissipate at most roughly 54.4W heat.

Ok - I get fanless, low noise, etc. But. I've just completed an MATX build, and the case only has a 92mm exhaust, with the PSU mounted at the top the 120mm fan is an important part of the exhaust design. It does have a 140mm intake tho...

If you've bought a fanless PSU you're potentially going for a silent system so you won't have fans at all.

Also, this won't be a cheap 550 watt PSU, I'd imagine, so you will have considered any potential airflow issues if there is any. Also, what MATX case only has a 92mm exhaust?!

Even so, the fan on a PSU never really gets going.

Re: Enermax launches the silent Digifanless 550W PSU

many MATX cases only have 92mm - I bought a Sharkoon because it had to fit in a very specific place in my lounge - but it does have a 140mm intake fan - I think the ATX case spec talks about using the PSU as an exhaust, but yes, things have changed...

But no fans? a fanless cooler and a fanless graphics card with no fans in the system? Anyone ever seen a setup like that?

Plenty of people have done completely fanless builds before. You won't find a serious 'gaming' system completely fanless but HTPC's? Yeah.

Also, excuse me but, if the case you have purchased has a 92mm rear exhaust and is MATX ( not MITX ) then it must have been a budget based decision, and you probably wouldn't want to spend the amount of money on a PSU that this PSU will cost. (Not that there is anything wrong with having a tight budget, all the RAM in my computer is Corsair ValueSelect). For about £30 you can pick up a Bitfenix Comrade that has two 120mm fans as intake and one 120mm fan as exhaust, it's pretty small and clean looking, just so you know

Re: Enermax launches the silent Digifanless 550W PSU

Wasn't budget based :-) I rebuilt the lounge with fitted cupboards with ventilation and cable routing - had to buy a case that fit a VERY specific size requirement - I got the Sharkoon case shipped over from Germany as it had sufficient cooling, USB3 ports and dust filters. Would I do it differently now? Probably, but I can game on it, it's quiet and hooked up to my TV... The Bitfenix just would not have fitted. And the Antec Fusion was just too deep...

Got Corsair XMS3 in all my PC's :-)

Seems strange to have the PCI-E power connectors standing out with a different colour, given the looks of the sleeved cables.
Cant tell how noisy mine is at present due to stock AM3+ cooler being responsible for most of the noise from my system at present.
