This is what happens when our telephone infrastructure and most people's broadband is supplied by what is basically a monopoly....it's not like they spend the huge profits (and line rental increases) they make on things which benefit all broadband users when they can spend billions on providing 'sports' to the few who want to watch it on their 'value added' features which only BT broadband users can view....

It will likely have such a sharp drop off so that at a distance of 1 mile it will be no better than adsl... bt own the last mile remember lol. It's always about headline speeds which very rarely are achieved outside 'ideal' situations.

I have had fibre running passed my house for some time now as N.Wilts council apparently paid BT a lot of money to do so way, way ahead of schedule.

If this is the case then why, when I go on the BT website, can't I find any fibre based packages and their postcode checker says that fibre is not installed.

Fortunately I live close to the exchange so I get the maximum download and upload speeds for the broadband package and the signal is clean so I don't suffer...but GODDAMMIT TA HELL...I WANT FIBRE !!!

I'm with Platinum on this...get the network working for everyone first then "ponce" about with it. With the price of copper these days they can underwrite the project with the old wires

There are a number of reasons for not getting maximum speed on FTTC....the most common being distance to the box......in some cases this is due to the closest box being full (or in the case of a friend of mine, an educational establishment have basically bought the entire cab and therefore they have connected him to a different box almost a mile away!)

Sure it would be nice to have FTTP but I'd rather not spend the £1-3k outlay to get that done!

I also find it odd that people think that research and rollouts of newer technology should have to wait until the last 5-10% of the population can get full FTTC speeds.......seems a little selfish and short-sighted of people. Once you can get a connection to your local cab, you will be able to jump strait to 300Mb instead of 80Mb.

it's not like virgin is really doing ftth either, is it. does anyone really think if openreach is spun off (for example), it'll roll out ftth? is anyone really seriously saying bt is taking profits from openreach and piling it into other divisions?

I'm so frustrated with BT... they have FTTC in my village, yet I can still only get ADSL MAX (up to 8mb) from them as my house is Exchange Only line... WTF. I dont have any other options, but to move house, or hope that the exchange gets demolished by a force of nature... ARGH.

Virgin Media customers are getting upgraded soon in October 2015. 50mb = 100mb 100mb to 200mb and 150mb to 300mb. while BT are just trailing Gfast of 330mb Rollout wont start Middle of 2016. I guess like most customers I want to see IPv6 being used more.

I find the following amusing sadly...

As another has already posted, this isn't new tech.
What they really mean is that they will string it out as long as they can, whilst charging extortionate line rental, so as not to impact their shareholders profits.
Isn't it about time BT and BT Openreach are truly split up, or that Openreach be re-nationalised (all the cable/wire and exchanges). This might even up the playing field a bit for other companies and therefore make it more competitive. And we the punters get a better deal, instead of being held hostage by BT.

While I understand this is just the way technology advances, it would be nice if they actually rolled out FTTC everywhere first, we still haven't got it on offer from anyone here, KCOM is preaching it's FTTP but hasn't come even remotely close to us yet, and for a while BT said we were planned for last year then seemingly pulled the plug.

Were not even that far out from Hull, unless BT are really that scared of the (deteriorating) monopoly KCOM has in the area, I don't see why they wouldn't roll out here. If they want to break up KCOM's monopoly surely the best thing to do is offer BT FTTC here before anyone else lays any down, people will flock to it to get off the very old copper lines around here.
