And it seems like you don't have to send the old one back.

What a waste. I'd have happily bought one and an official battery and done a replacement... Society is getting dangerously wasteful nowadays.

Re: Customers start to receive Nvidia SHIELD tablet replacements

I've not got mine yet but I am now intrigued about installing a custom rom and doing a battery swap so I can have a backup device or gift it to a mate.

@ cheesemp, i'd have done the same but I don't think the average tablet user would be able to. Also Society is already dangerously wasteful ! which is the reason the planet is being destroyed.

Definitely agree, although I thought that tablets were one of those things where you can't do a battery replacement. Would love to replace the battery on my 2012 model Note10 tablet.

Wonder if the battery issue is the reason why Shield tablets are now becoming hard to find. Dabs, Scan, eBuyer, etc don't seem to have them and Amazon's only showing the 32GB model. Or have they heard about an X1-powered replacement...

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

    Still waiting on mine

I've not powered mine on at all. I've always been suspicious of this device, it makes some strange noises when it's idle, almost sounds like a fan inside it if you put your ear up to the speaker grill. That or white noise, it's hard to pinpoint.

One time, it did make a high-pitched squealing noise - only ever happened once and lasted about a minute while the tablet was off. I did report it to Nvidia nearly a year ago but they said it was fine and only to contact them if it did it again.

If anyone is thinking of trying to save there old tablet before its too late have a read of this:

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tablet/general/kill-kill-switch-shield-tablet-xx-t3179489

your tablet may already have the kill switch enabled, so its worth checking.

Yes, but I cant take my pc to bed when I want to watch youtube etc. Tablets are there imo for ease of mind and portability.

Re: Customers start to receive Nvidia SHIELD tablet replacements

I had an email from Nvidia this morning saying my new tablet had been shipped, So I've spent most of the morning rooting my current shield and installing the Blisspop ROM. The ROM is almost identical to the official one except it lacks any of the Nvidia applications, although I have read in forums that people still manage to run grid so I guess they have sideloaded that stuff from somewhere.

I must give a big thankyou to Hexus for alerting me to this possibility ! next up I need to try and source a new battery for it

Re: Customers start to receive Nvidia SHIELD tablet replacements

Well mine turned up. Appears brand new and is in the retail packaging long with a new charger etc...

Also came with a rather large box to send the old one back.. Given what a state it ended up in I don't think I will attempt a rescue on it and just let it die in peace... Actually in pieces fits better lol

Re: Customers start to receive Nvidia SHIELD tablet replacements

I'd be worried if they aren't insisting on getting the faulty devices back before sending out new. Makes me think a lot of potentially faulty Shields are going to pop up on auction sites and before long your average buyer isn't going to know f they have bought a safe or unsafe device.

The battery version can still be checked in settings even on a custom ROM, but what you say i'm sure will be an issue for some people looking to buy, who have not even heard of the recall.
