Re: Sony outs the Xperia Z5 Premium, the world's first 4K smartphone

That sounds like a fantastic phone. But I'm unsure whether my eyes could really tell the difference between, lets say, a QHD and a 4K screen on a phone. But I also didn't think much of 4K monitors until I saw one in real life, so I'm reserving judgment until I can hold the phone in my hand. Either way it's nice that mobile tech is being pushed.

    they forgot to mention
*comes with gazillion bloatwares which you cannot uninstall

also, selling certain colour variants to certain networks?! even if i did have a tiny interest in the phone they really lost it there

I think having a 4k phone is pointless until they release longer-lasting batteries. That battery is going to die too fast

Overheating Snapdragon 810 with 4K display, that it can't really power. That sounds like a total disaster aimed only at giving them opportunity to say "hey, we were first to introduce such a stupid idea to market!".

My Z3 Compact is sorta dying. By the time I replace it, they'll be announcing the Z7... or pulling out of the smartphone market entirely

Re: Sony outs the Xperia Z5 Premium, the world's first 4K smartphone

I'm afraid that they are doing what other manufacturers have been doing for the last.....well, who knows how long. Eeking out some piece of crap that the public are deceived into believing is the latest be all and end all of technology. When some of us know it is a load of old garbage, that could be a lot better, but they need to make a load of profit on a lie. But then that has been what has been going on for years.
    rant over......although true, unfortunately :/

The Z5 Compact does have 4K video recording. See here, under the camera section:

Re: Sony outs the Xperia Z5 Premium, the world's first 4K smartphone

It's interesting how they neglect to mention the pixel density for anything other than the 4K phone (806P/I), the Z5 coming in at 424P/I, and the compact at 319P/I. At least because of it's sub-standard screen, the compact will be coming in at a lower pri... £549. How can they possibly get away with pricing it higher than every other flagship, with a screen that would've been sub-standard 2 years ago?

Re: Sony outs the Xperia Z5 Premium, the world's first 4K smartphone

They really need to stop the screen resolution war. 720p is probably enough but 1080p is something which should be included as you can see the difference. Anything above that and you can't really see the difference and the battery just drains faster. What really matters is the quality and colour rendering of such display.

Also the selling of particular colours through only certain networks is getting ridiculous. I don't expect MotoMaker functionality (although it would be nice) but at least let us choose a colour without being tied to a network you don't want.

Although a 4k screen seems stupid I can tell the difference between a 1080p and a QHD screen. I am lucky to have 20/20 vision though

I was looking at the Z5 Compact.. but that's a HUGE premium over the Z3 Compact for little more than a better camera

Re: Sony outs the Xperia Z5 Premium, the world's first 4K smartphone

So the Z5 Premium is going to be underpowered and have zero battery life, the Z5 compact looks horribly over-priced...

The regular Z5 better be pretty fantastic or Sony are going to be in trouble here!

Well like the compact, it's basically a Z3 with a better camera and hugely more expense so not great. (Yes I know, newer processor etc. but in the real world not much difference)

Re: Sony outs the Xperia Z5 Premium, the world's first 4K smartphone

A 4K screen on a phone is absolutely absurd, paired with the 810 it's like they've just thrown the most power-hungry components into a small form-factor for the sake of it to feign some kind of progress/innovation without actually thinking about it. Agree with Saracen, seems like the hardware for that one was specced out by the marketing department.

I just hope the launch of the Z5 series pushes the Z3 Compact down in price, then I'll probably be looking at either that or the OnePlus Two -- only concerns with the latter being the lack of removal storage and battery life. I had high hopes for the Z5 Compact but I won't be paying £550 for what's essentially a mid-spec phone.

From what's being said, it sounds like the Snapdragon 820 could be the SoC to hold out for in terms of performance & efficiency. Barring any cock-ups, I'm sure that'll make for quite a promising line-up by the time the Z6 rolls around... I just don't know how much longer I can co-exist with my iPhone 4 before one of us reaches breaking point.
