Re: Nvidia releases GeForce GTX 980 for gaming laptops

Surely these huge things are better described as "portable computers" than laptops/notebooks, I doubt they are very lap friendly, and a bit overkill for notes...

But anyway, not for me - I'm much keener on the ultraportable that can connect to a display and GPU on my desk idea. Gaming on the move is a not likely, but taking my laptop to do work is and I'd rather not carry a monster. Also GPUs tend to become obsolete faster than the rest of the system and it'd be good to have an easy upgrade...

Even though the thermals on the 980s are very good, I can expect there to be a few toasted legs from overclocking.

Desktop replacement is a better phrase than gaming laptop to describe these beasts

Re: Nvidia releases GeForce GTX 980 for gaming laptops

This sets a useful precedent though. If "not quite desktop but... 90% of it" performance becomes available in laptops, it becomes slightly more possible to make it the only machine one owns.

Have a good selection of extra storage/soundcards/other devices etc on a thunderbolt plug (that includes a USB hub) and there's a rather tidy system without the need for the desktop chassis tucked under the desk. I was looking at a laptop for my next system but dissuaded by "does it have enough performance for a decent VR experience" thoughts.
