Always makes me smile when i read reports that Microsoft have yet again sold out, you would think seeing as how every previous version of the Surface have also sold out that they would've worked out stock levels by now.

They maybe selling out but statistics show they still have a pitiful share of the market, if Microsoft wants to change that they've got a lot of work to do on the supply side of things.

"We used third-party benchmarks to test the best available Surface Book against the best available 13-inch MacBook Pro, neither of which is worth the over inflated price tag"

    Fixed it

    Aw that 940M is disappointing. I had hoped for a 950M, 960, or 965.

940m is still pretty adequate for laptop style gaming and running about with things like photoshop and video compiling. Commonly Laptops labelled "gaming" have a x20m and x40m being the better version. It's only when you get to the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-E area of gaming/performance laptops which are at least a k and a half when you get to the x80m series. Coupled with this being an all in one, if they did do that, you'd be looking in the 3k+ price range and plus the cooling for those laptops makes them huge and battery life not worth even mentioning. The choice of x40m I think is good choice between performance/cooling/power/draw/size

It's not even a 940M... it's slower and has less bandwidth, you could maybe call it a 935M, well considering there isn't really any upgrade between the 940 and the 840 you could call it an 835 lol.

When you think about what that is pretty pointless especially with the hi res screen, not to mention the iris/iris pro gpu's in the latest skylake cpu's probably isn't far off performance wise. They could have at least stretched to a 2gb 950M considering the price etc.

    does GDDR5 - 5010Hz equates better to 940M?
    No PhysX engine?

SB works with both GPU with DX12. Wouldn't that performance is actually dGPU+iGPU?

I think that requires Intel and Nvidia to work together on drivers, which is unlikely to happen

They should have just stuck to using an Iris Pro version with L4 cache!

I do want a Surface Book or MacBook pro, but before testing one thoroughly, can't make up my mind.

unless you're ready to live with iris graphics, the 13inch MBP isn't going to be a GPU capable machine. As soon as you fall on that intel chip, you'll be using slow LPDDR3 as graphics ram and giving up all your gains. Either go with this 940, or upgrade to the 15inch beast with a discrete AMD chip.

DX12 has already demo cross GPU support where you can use the integrated graphics and external, or even nvidia + amd cards. I don't see why this is an issue at all. It is more likely up to the software program to leverage it but DX12 already handles all the heavy lifting to make it happen.

384 shaders and GDDR5? That doesn't sound right. I don't think the GM108 has been packaged with GDDR5 before which may mean it doesn't support it.

If that's the case either the shader count is wrong and it has more or, just possibly, this is a new chip. Pascal is unlikely, but a low end Maxwell 2 chip (HEVC & HDMI 2.0) would be very exciting news generally.
