Re: Star Citizen is free to try this week

It's sounding like poorer and poorer value for money if they start saying Squadron 42 is a paid extra that requires Star Citizen.

But if they made it a stand alone game I'd be quite happy - will just be able to judge value for money when released and buy it or not, ignoring the ho-hah about Star Citizen stuff I'm not interested in.

Why would Squadron 42 need star citizen? It's a separate single player game just reusing the assets for star citizen. Both are separate from each other. The only tie in being that you will be able to bring in your character from SQ42 into the star citizen 'MMO' giving you some for of credit/reputation boost.

The only split is here is to make them the two games as originally stated. You effectively buy one get one free at the moment.

Given same assets it could quite easily be considered a campaign set within a wider MMO, ie you buy an Star Citizen account and then add on whatever campaigns etc. that you want. It would be very nice if Squadron 42 was stand alone though, as I say, especially if it was off-line.

But SQ42 is offline? I'm not sure what the confusion is here. Its a standalone game. It doesn't need star citizen. Chris Roberts has stated it will be playable offline. Thats what this split is about. Spliting the single player from the 'MMO'.

Why? Its already very playable - go try the free fly and see. Sure its taking time (3 years of active dev) but other similar scale games have taken far longer to develop - you just don't see it because its behind close doors. Fallout 4 took far longer to release.

Then that all sounds good. I wasn't sure if you would have to have some kind of account to be able to play Squadron 42. If you don't then cool.

It is a campaign set within the universe of the MMO it happens a few years before the play time in the MMO universe. The single player is independent of of the Universe side. process is you register for free, then you can either buy Star Citizen which is a one of pay to play MMO like GW2 OR you can buy squadron 42 and play the single player. If you choose to get both you can move your character stats and rewards from the SP to the MP. The further episodes of the game will do the same, you buy them and play them and can jump back and forth to the multiplayer or just ignore them completely. But you don't need to play the star citizen universe to play the SP, but the universe itself can be set to be heavily PvE so it's basically single player with occasional coop.

Though developed mainly by two persons, a game as Overgrowth has started development in 2008 and ... it's still in alpha. There has been talk about a beta for several years now, but it kinda seems like the project that never satisfy nor bore the creator (David).

Fallout 4 was self-funded and released exactly when they said it would be from the time it was announced, so I hardly see how that's relevant.

Because good involved games take time to make? How is it not relevant? They've consistently shown what they are working on. They've progressed so far from the early releases and its easy to verify that using the free fly week. Go have a look. Its got more content than most EA recent 'DLC' games have (looking at you battlefield).

How is this 'free'? You have to pay for a ship before downloading!

I don't get this; I created a new Pilot/account, and then get taken to a screen where i HAVE TO SELECT A SHIP(at 35 quid); 'Select a game package below
These include everything you will need to play the Star Citizen Alpha 2.0 today and also get the full Star Citizen game upon release.' That's not free, isn't it?
