Since "normal" versions will NEVER offer the telemetry off switch, I recommend finding what urls Windows communicates with & blocking them in your router firewall, as Windows seems to ignore its own hosts file.

oh so businesses that don't need enterprise, due to say lack of numbers of staff or freelancers like myself, but do use pro versions don't get that telemtry off switch.... why not ignore the privacy and non disclosure policies of the smaller companies. Seriously as much as I like ms, their viewpoint on privacy is stupid with windows 10 and it's just another reason for me NOT to upgrade to it.

The only reason I'm using windows 10 at all is due to getting the enterprise version through the action pack.
Even then it's not on my home PC.

It is in the corporate mindset of companies that seem determined to spy on their users whether they like it or not.

Frankly, I don't much care what MS do with Win10 at this point. I don't see any realistic prospect of them ever stopping viewing consumer users as anything other than a data goldmine to be exploited, and even if they did announce a complete attitude shift, I no longer trust them enough to believe they're actually sincere.

MS can fold Win10 until it's all sharp corners, douse it in petrol, shove it somewhere downright uncomfortable and set light to it.

So, Windows 10 is now "the most trusted platform ever"? Sorry to burst your bubble, Satya, but I don't trust Windows 10 farther than I can throw it. Which, admittedly, isn't very far, considering that even 4 GB of bits don't weigh particularly much.

Wouldn't it just be easier to not use W10, they can after all update peoples PCs anytime they wish and remove workarounds or changes that customers have made.

We have a debt collection company who has pci dss compliance who seem to be all over the place about this OS.

You can fix the Telemetry issue, by setting Diagnostic and Usage to Basic (Under Privacy Settings). Go to the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection and add a new DWORD AllowTelemetry and set the value to 0. Then lastly Open services and disable Diagnostics Tracking Service and also dmwappushsvc. Restart Windows 10 and no more Telemetry.

Hmm, counter argument occurs. Is it possible that EU (specifically German) law might look pretty unfavourably on such invasions. Given MS's propensity for messing up, it's pretty conceivable (in my mind at least) for such a "workaround removal" to go wrong and end up with a bricked PC as a result. In which case I'm guessing an "ambulance chaser" could be looking for pretty sizeable damages.

What little I know about these financial services rules (I really must look 'em up sometime) the amount of privacy invasions inherent in W10 must be causing some concerns. And I'm pretty sure that we'll (or rather the corporate customers) will see a patch from Redmond to "fix" these. Not exactly a good way to persuade folks to buy into your new wonder OS.

I think I'm going to be forced to jump to W10 at some point soon, (W7 box now getting annoying and there's no way in heck I'm going to W8), but I'm less than impressed. Kind of glad that my "main" OS is still Ubuntu.

AFAIK the 'AllowTelemetry' setting in the registry will only work if you're running Windows 10 Enterprise, Windows 10 Education, and IoT Core, setting it to 0 on any other edition would be treated as 1 (basic) so the only way to prevent the data collection would be to disable the relevant services.

EDIT: It would seem from some early reports that this update is resetting peoples default programs and other settings like telemetry and privacy.

Can't see that happening as everyone whose installed Windows 10 has agreed to enforced updates.

EDIT: It would seem from some early reports that this update is resetting peoples default programs and other settings like telemetry and privacy.

I've got mine set to download automatically but only install when I give it the go ahead. It did require changing group policy settings though.. :-(
