Because the affected cards "reached peak performance optimization" yesterday.

I couldn't even tell you which cards are affected.

AMD's mixing & matching of architectures within their version numbering scheme is a total cluster****.

It would be more amusing if they you couldn't still by these 'legacy' cards from major (r)etailers! 5450 HD anyone?

Thats pretty rubbish. My A8-5550m APU is only one and a half years old and is now legacy. I didn't even think to check if the APU was GCN. Putting me off buying a 380(x)/390...

Developers at nVidia are rolling in the aisle right now having read this.

So glad I don't own any AMD based equipment any more.

Nvidia did this like 5 times by now, every year or so... I knew no Nvidia fanboy would remember that fact.

So, as far as I can tell, this affects:

    HD 5000 - all models
    HD 6000 - all models
HD 7600 and below, but not HD 7700 and above
HD 8400 and below, but not HD 8500 and above
    R5 2xx cards, except for the R5 240
APUs with 4000 or 5000 series model numbers

Re: AMD driver support for non-GCN graphics cards comes to an end

It is impressive how selective memory work for some people...

nVidia still sells GeForce 210 which is dropped to legacy status more than a year ago, yet "omg amd doesn't support but dare to sell legacy products"... which again is not amd or nvidia matter, they have sold the chips and their partners still have stock to sell, so they sell it on lower prices. (This is for the gpus only)
Because guess what, a driver at legacy status doesn't mean you card will stop working or anything, it means that it will no longer get any performance improvements through drivers, which is really not even worth mentioning at gpus that low, yeah you did noticed that 1fps you got from the last driver, didn't you?

Also all the cards that fall to legacy status now have their drivers for the latest for the latest windows version, so yeah if I get a new pc for my mom and I need a super low budget gpu they will still work for me. Another thing to consider is that even if they say a driver is in legacy status, this doesn't mean they will never see again a bug fix, it means that most of the bugs are eliminated and in case of a major breaking bug they will release a hotfix to get the cards in working order again.

I still use a 4850 on a system and I do play modern games on it with legacy drivers, no bugs, no problems, all good. Yeah so relax now and stop overacting.

Considering I just recently bought an R7 240 for my father for £25.49, which is maybe 4yrs newer and 7x faster than the GeForce 210, I'm not sure there is a place for the GeForce. Or the 5450 for that matter which is less than twice as fast as the GeForce and about a year newer.

Re: AMD driver support for non-GCN graphics cards comes to an end

Good move AMD, this will give you the room to make better budget cards for next year with better efficiency. Not like the cards that are no longer supported will suddenly stop working... and the drivers will still be available to download just no more bug fixes since they have no reason to add more to them since most of those cards are garbage for anything other than desktop use anyways.
If you had HBM on mid range cards already I would have an AMD card right now but I'm waiting for the mid range to get HBM and your new architecture.

I'm glad the rumors were not true that you might be keeping those older product lines they are long long since needing replacement.

Lets be honest the other team does drop support but borks performance on many older cards.

Only one pc affected here running an a8-3870k, it doesn't run games anyway so not to worried.
