So it wants you to start to use its Steam Guard two-factor authentication system.

As some people won't want to, or can't enable two-factor authentication for some reason,
My reason is their refusal to use a system that works on anything other than iOS & Android devices. If they don't want to develop for other systems that's fine, but at least offer text message codes as an alternative as MS & Google do.

I set up mine a couple weeks ago and could swear you were allowed to just use a mobile number!

I assume there is a client add to get the auth code... and no Windows Mobile version

Email works fine for me...

Also set mine up using a phone, didn't need any app installed, just the mobile number.

Can I disable trading in my account? I have never used it.

Re: Valve says around 77,000 Steam accounts are hacked every month
I've set up both my phone number and the app but steam won't stop strongly recomming setting up a phone number and the app, before letting me do anything with the PC client.
I took your advice! I cannot take your advice any more, stop advising me!

This. As for disabling Trading, it makes Valve money so you can't.

Re: Valve says around 77,000 Steam accounts are hacked every month
Whilst I appreciate Valve trying to make Steam more secure, I have no intention of sharing my mobile number with them.

Valve need to start supporting Windows Phone too.. WP8 has been out for 3 years and there is still no official Steam app for it. Is Gabe on a personal vendetta against Microsoft?

Re: Valve says around 77,000 Steam accounts are hacked every month
I've been using the Android app for a few months and the Steam guard element of it for a while and its been fine for me and a welcome level of security on a resource (game library) that has cost me many hundreds of pounds.
It's no big chore, and I will be putting it on my sons account and phone shortly too.

I prefer the Email Security, instate of Steam App.

Re: Valve says around 77,000 Steam accounts are hacked every month
I found the mobile app is much quicker for confirming trades than emails, which don't always seem to come through instantly. I always thought that it'd annoy me if my phone wasn't nearby - but then my phone is always nearby (who knows, it might ring one day..!)

It's not hacked when you give someone your password...

Gah, I'd rather they stick to the more standard authenticator-style codes.. that's good enough for LastPass, Wordpress, GitHub, etc. Or at least have the option to use those style of codes instead of their app.
