Re: Microsoft updates Windows 10 UWP for uncapped frame rates

Its a start, but I wish they would bring back full screen exclusive mode... The following taken from the blog:

Does DirectX 12 and UWP support full screen exclusive mode?

Full screen exclusive mode was created back in the original release of DirectDraw to provide games with enhanced performance when using the entire screen. The downside of full screen exclusive mode is that it makes the experience for gamers who wish to do other things on their system, such as alt-tab to another application or run the Windows GameDVR, more clunky with excessive flicker and transition time.

We thought it would be cool if gamers could have the versatility of gaming in a window with the performance of full screen exclusive.

So, with Windows 10, DirectX 12 games which take up the entire screen perform just as well as the old full screen exclusive mode without any of the full screen exclusive mode disadvantages. This is true for both Win32 and UWP games which use DirectX 12. All of these games can seamlessly alt-tab, run GameDVR, and exhibit normal functionality of a window without any perf degradation vs full screen exclusive.
I believe that's whats stopping multi GPU from working. I don't mind going through their store etc to download games, but I live in hope that they somehow make a change here...

Don't think that applies to DX12. Mantle already supported crossfire in window mode.

Re: Microsoft updates Windows 10 UWP for uncapped frame rates

I know that Microsoft would like nothing better than being able to kill off Win32 in favour of UWP. However, considering that UWP applications can only be purchased/downloaded from the Windows Store I cannot see that happen any time soon.

No sane company/developer would limit themselves to only one outlet for their software. And being at the mercy of Microsoft on top of that. One would think the same of users, but considering how many have (wittingly) "upgraded" to Windows 10, I'm not so sure about that any more.

Since hearing Tim Sweeney's most recent opinion on UWP i just can't shake the image of Microsoft trying to cook a load of frogs in a giant cooking pot, the water was a little warm at first so some of the frogs jumped out, now their testing what the ideal starting temperature is before slowly upping the heat and cooking all the frogs.

Is this the case for UWP (ie Windows Store) downloads? Rise of the Tomb Raider (which a friend owns) and Quantum Break (which I own) neither utilise our multi-GPUs. I believe ROTR from steam supports multi-GPU which is why I thought it was a UWP restriction. I may be wrong though.

Just googled a bit. Seems like Microsoft has no intention to support multi-GPU on UWP at all.

Their blog post says otherwise, although how you want to interpret "you can expect to see some exciting developments on multiple GPUs in DirectX 12 in the near future" is up to you.

DX12 and UWP are two completely different things.

UWP does stop RotTR from using SLI/CF but there is a hack to add the executable to the list of supported images that your drivers will hook into, fixing it.

The DX12 games are sadly down to the developers to write mGPU support into....and this is why I see SLI/CF as being dead moving forward.

Yea we know that, what makes me hesitate though is Microsoft being seemingly incapable of separating the two (PR, marketing wise) when it comes to talking about games, I'm not saying UWP can or ever will be able to handle multi-GPUs but it would be yet another in a series of boneheaded moves if it didn't, to say all DX12 games will support multi-GPU but not if they use UWP would be a proper facepalm moment.

TBH, I think it's not a case of being incapable, rather they are resistant to it and are trying to make UWP as "user friendly" as a console. This means users shouldn't need to know anything about whats going on behind the scenes.

Of course, most of us understand that doesn't work in the PC ecosystem :S

To be this will be another Origin, you will buy some games on it cause you have to. But as most people you will continue to buy on steam and use Win32 executables to play games, if they force gamers hands they are going to drive people the likes of steamOS.

I really am hating Microsoft's pushing of people personally professionally to Windows 10, this crap with dropping Windows 7 support for CPUs after Skylake is a flipping joke.

Re: Microsoft updates Windows 10 UWP for uncapped frame rates

Now that I have tried FM6:Apex(Beta) on my machine, I know that UWP games are not for my computer. They are slow to start, I got full-screen and maximized mixed up, they refer to XboxOne buttons even if I have an Xbox360 pad, and most importantly, I got stutter, low quality graphics and confusing video settings menus (it might be the translation, though). I suppose I better game on XboxOne rather than on my PC, at least with FM6.
