Why cant they just run fibre alongside the overhead telephone wires directly to the home??? Virgin did a very successful trial of it in a village near me, much cheaper than digging up the road.
Here in my small city in the US they just finished rolling out fibre to the entire city last year. $40/mo for 100/100Mbit. No contract. No caps. No filtering. It's good stuff! Gigabit fibre is only 60/mo.
They buried everything under the sidewalks without tearing anything up using horizontal drilling. Though they could have placed their splice boxes in more aesthetic locales.
