As I've said before, I think we largely agree on the key point that AMD have chosen to report figures that make them look good. Where we disagree is that you seem to think their figure is either incorrect or invalid. All the available evidence suggests that the figure is correct, so presumably you think it's invalid for some other reason? I'd be interested to know why, because then we could actually start having a proper debate about it.

I don't and haven't said or think their figure is either incorrect or invalid, I've repeatedly said time and time again that AMD have chosen to report figures that make them look good, *that it's a good job no one has ever interpreted statistics in a way to paint something in a different light.

    *being sarcastic there BTW.

It's the equivalent of an advert that says 98% of women agree that washy-washy shampoo gives their hair that just out of the salon look.

    Of 63 women asked

Clearly we have different interpretations of "I'm going to take their claim with a mountain of salt" and "the report needs to be independently verified". To me both of those statements mean you distrust the figures.

Have a proper read of where this started. You questioned whether the AMD figures actually include the PS4 - as AMD claim they do. I've since quoted three different articles - all of which are linked from this thread somewhere - which state that the figures include the PS4, one of which (fudzilla) states they've had that fact independently verified. I've also run the available figures for total VR market if we include VR-ready PCs and the PS4, and it gives you the 83% figure that AMD claim.

EDIT: was going to wait for a reply, but actually this is relevant enough to drop in an edit I think. I noticed that CAT's quote from AMD's press release had a footnote mark, so I went and read it. Here's the link to the press release: http://www.amd.com/en-us/press-relea...2016mar14.aspx and here's the footnote (emphasis added):

    1. According to Jon Peddie Research as of March 11, 2016, AMD is estimated as powering 83% of the total addressable market for dedicated VR HMDs
So not only does the press release explicitly say they are counting consoles, they even give a reasonably precise definition of the market they're talking about - dedicated VR HMDs. That means XBox One is out - no HMD currently announced/available. It means any device that you stick a mobile phone in is out - not dedicated. That only leaves Vive, Rift and PSVR in the mainstream market, plus the Sulon Q (which is explicitly mentioned in the press release, incidentally).

So yes, of course AMD are cherry picking their definition, and we don't know if JPR helped them with that or if AMD came up with the definition then simply extracted the appropriate numbers from JPR's market share report to get there. But they've been pretty damn up front about how they got to that figure, and it ties in with the figures that are publicly available for that market.

AMD are generations ahead of anyone else. It makes total sense AMD would be running away with the VR market.

No, I suspect that the right questions were asked, ask the right questions and you'll get a right answer.

And every article which are linked from this thread somewhere seem to indicate that AMD asked JPR the "right" questions to get the answer they wanted, such as include the next-gen consoles, include only X86 computing platform and headset, and possibility any other inclusions or exclusions such as the one you highlighted that excluded the XboxOne

Maybe we think differently about what being up front is about then as i wouldn't consider saying you've taken a 83% Share of Global VR System Market as being upfront when that claim comes with a long list of caveats, inclusions, and exclusions.

It's probably more than 83% now.
