Interesting. I wonder if they feel less pressure from AMD as the last few years they have been behind performance wise.

They feel pressure from all over, ARM chips are getting rather good for things like ChromeBooks which are selling rather well. I think this just reflects the reality that process improvements are getting harder.

No, Haswell refresh was the first, tick tock has been proken for years. Even before then, the process improvement "ticks" had quite a lot of optimisation in them so weren't the pure tick that Intel made them out to be.

But overall I think this is just sleight of hand. Intel has lost most of their process lead to Samsung and TSMC, and I suspect they are taking a punt so they don't care about that. If Intel can crack 5nm using something other than CMOS on Silicon, then they are way out ahead again.

So a new chipset and refresh of the last gen CPU followed by a new chip and another refresh.

Tic, Tock, Tic, Tic, Tock, Tic.

Needs more Tock or less chipsets.

It would be amazing if you get the same upgradeability in Intel as you get in AMD. But to make money they change sockets every 2 years.

Well, Lets see how it comes out !

That finished with Sandybridge anyway. Since then we have only had tiny performance increases with each release. Maybe AMD's Zen will be as good as we hope and we will get worthwhile performance increases again.

This is true, my 3570k is still more than capable. I iwll say I can see the small improvements are starting to add up to a reasonable jump but over several generations.

I think I will wait for Zen and Kaby Lake and potentially upgrade then. (Hoping Zen works out well)

I';m with you on that one, Have a 3570k myself @ 4.5Ghz and find it very hard to come up with a reason to replace it.

They could have just extended the sequence. An optimisation is just a slight change in direction, so .. Tick, Tock, Tack.

And they'd still have been able to add a fourth stage for minor tweaking .. Tick, Tock, Tack, Tyke.

Then they could extend it even further with a purely marketing phase based on waccy baccy brainstorming sessions .. Tick, Tock, Tack, Tyke, Toke.
