Thinking about it, the concept as laid out doesn't thrill me, but you could probably do something quite interesting - if you could get enough contacts - with an mITX board with edge connectors. If both the bottom and back edge of the board were lined with edge connectors you could have extension boards - additional PCIe slots and extra IO - that pushed onto the edges of the board. You'd need all the chipset logic on the main component, but it's not as ridiculous as it sounds at first...

A 100TB 3.5-Inch HDD with HAMR/Helium has been made by a new joint-venture between Seagate, WD and Toshiba, formed especially for the new Enterprise TB100, under the name of SeaWestTosh, Inc.

    I, too, like MSI's idea.

Imagine if MSI had designed this sort of motherboard when the 2nd gen i5's and i7's came out.
So, if you wanted to upgrade to a 6th gen i7, you could remove the socket, the chipset , the DDR3 slots and attach new bits

The idea sounds intriguing, and with the right cables and connectors, it could be possible.
Since we can get modular cases, some are odd modular shapes and others that bolt together, you could move the modular motherboard pieces into different places - example:- the PCI slots to another section of the case for better cooling.
You could even come up with your own ideas about a wild shaped cases with all the MB pieces in separate sections.
    Be great for upgrading.
