Re: Microsoft unveils flagship Lumia 950/XL phones with Windows 10

I think this sounds like a good phone. I'm glad to see the glance screen return (it is not available on the current Lumia flagship phone). I'm also interested in the so called 'liquid cooling' tech and whether this can counter the problems of GPS heat.

I've already got the 930, so I won't be upgrading for a few years at least, but I do hope that Microsoft sticks with this, even if it is catering more to a niche market. I would like to see them really focus on the business aspect of the Windows Phone - which I think makes sense if the majority of (non-artsy) businesses are using Windows and Office products such as Outlook. I can see Windows Phone becoming the flashy professional work phone. But Microsoft really needs to focus on software development for its own phones and not Android and IOS. Plenty of Windows Phone users are feeling shafted when apps are updated and released first on non-Windows OSs.

exciting times for MS. Shame they can't see the perks of a smaller phone, particularly given that you could plug it into a box for a monitor to scale things up if necessary. I can't wait for a small yet powerful phone resurgence

Pricing (on MS store) is up as £499.99 for the 950 and £549.99 for the 950XL.
Thats around a £125 more for the XL over the USA pricing.

So very reasonable, given our 20% VAT and the extra costs of selling in a foreign and smaller market.

Adding 20% to the USA pricing still makes the XL £40 dearer here, i doubt the sales tax is 20% in the States.
Unlikely the phone ships from the USA either, more likely direct from some chinese manufacturer and its exactly the same phone for whatever country so a market being foriegn or smaller is really irrelevant.
Both phones are likely to be cheaper here from a reseller so thats where i will be looking.

That 950 is perfect for me. Good size, microSD, bigger battery than my S6, USB Type-C. I am sold.

£40 isn't much, when you have to deal with all the added costs of our market compared to MS's home. It's not just about shipping, it's logistics, currency costs, labour market differences etc. etc.

$650 is about £425 but then we add on tax at 20% = £510. Add the import tariff too and it's not far off the mark. Remember our tax buys us hospital beds and free surgery. People often do direct monetary translations but forget about the tax we pay that US states apply at different rates.

I have a 640XL, its a good device, well made, reasonable price and Windows phone is so much better than Android or IOS.
Microsoft (Windows phone) though have a very small market share and i think they have missed the boat here pricing wise if they wish to grab market share, the XL should have come in under £499, maybe nearer to £450 if they wish to get Droiders and iFanbois to switch.

Re: Microsoft unveils flagship Lumia 950/XL phones with Windows 10

It'll get there. This is the early adopter premium at the moment.

The 950 seems fairly well priced to the competition.

    Sony Z5 = £550
    Samsung S6 (after price drop) = £450
    iPhone 6S = £540-620

Promising, I could probably just about handle the non XL. Have my eye on the z5 compact, though.

Re: Microsoft unveils flagship Lumia 950/XL phones with Windows 10

I read an article recently from back when the Lumia's first started being MS branded, bemoaning the fact that Microsoft hadn't taken the opportunity to go after any of Blackberry's market and make a Lumia (or create some new brand) the provided Windows Phone and a physical qwerty keyboard.

With Windows 10 now available and Blackberry completely abandoning the lower end of the market, surely now is the time to be a little bold, rather than just producing another bog standard large-screen high-end smartphone. When my Q5 finally dies it's looking increasingly like I'll end up with ... a second-hand Q5 *sigh*
