Re: QOTW: Which tech do you boycott?

I wouldn't say I dislike anything enough to really classify it as "boycotting". I use Android instead of iOS, because thats what I prefer. While I haven't used more recent versions of iOS, I used iOS 6 on my iTouch 4G and while it was nice, and people's comments about it "just working" are correct, I find the more open nature of Android more beneficial to my use case specifically (if theyd stop pratting around with microsd support)

Similarly I use an Nvidia card right now, but I don't hate AMD, I avoided them at the time of building this pc because of my limited PSU, but now that I'm doing my first upgrade pass, I'm upping my PSU and keeping an eye on HBM offerings from both sides when they eventually release.

The only thing I actively avoid I would say is AMD CPUs since past a certain price range they are indeed pants. Not really boycotting though, just fulfilling my needs.

I'm also avoiding the new windows versions because of the route they are going, though that said the last few days I've been fiddling with a trial version of it in a virtual box, to see if I can configure it to my liking with ribbon disabler, removing all tiles on the start menu etc.

So ye, I have definite preferences, but I really wouldn't say I hate any particular company or product enough to actively boycott them. I guess at a stretch, the closest company to that for me would be Seagate. I don't consider myself as boycotting them though, but rather I choose to use WD drives because Seagates have always had a terrible failure rate for me.

    Windows 10?

Though I want to like it, I can't with the default spying options. I'll probably give in at some point or maybe Linux will take off in time and I'll go that route. Who's to say MS won't suddenly decide to change the T&Cs or "update" in future to turn back on the spying features, if you have disabled/blocked them?
It's funny how Governments and corporations are allowed privacy, but the average person on the street gets patronised and laughed off, if they object to invasions of privacy.

Re: QOTW: Which tech do you boycott?

I don't boycott anything, but some companies make my choices easier by the amount they charge being way out of line of the value.

On the other hand I won't buy Intel products on a self-build because I believe their prices are over-inflated for what they offer, and I don't want their half-assed integrated GPUs. But I have Intel products within other devices I've bought. Atom still sucks, by the way, and Windows 10 doesn't help.

Re: QOTW: Which tech do you boycott?

Generally speaking, I'll pick whichever product has the best price vs quality ratio.

The only area where I won't is Apple - I just wouldn't buy it either way. So on that basis, just Apple.

I boycott Facebook. If it's important enough people can call me, not got time for constant updates about who's having coffee and where they are.

Re: QOTW: Which tech do you boycott?

I can't say I really 'boycott' anything particularly other than dyson, they're just overrated and look cheap to me.

I don't go out of my way to buy Apple stuff as for my needs it's not the right choice in terms of hardware requirements or the best value proposition compared with building my own windows based machine. In the same vein I currently only buy nvidia cards due to using software that performs better on cuda (mental ray) than open-cl although this might change with amd's future planned software releases.

Re: QOTW: Which tech do you boycott?

I don't consciously boycott anything, closing ones mind to technology is just narrow minded and self defeating. So I will buy and use whatever fits my requirement at the time, having due regard to quality and function.

That indirectly leads me away from some products, in particular the latest version of Windows, and conversely currently leading me towards Apple's products.

Re: QOTW: Which tech do you boycott?

I don't boycott anything. I avoid brands and companies that I've had bad experiences with and stick to ones I've had positive experiences with. I'm not boycotting the iPhone, I don't like the iPhone because of the choices Apple have made, I'm not boycotting EA, I don't like their games because of the choices they have made. I can't think of any product that I want but won't buy because of extrinsic reasons.

Re: QOTW: Which tech do you boycott?

I avoid Apple, because I'm not going to buy tech just to be 'trendy' and because 'everyone else does it'. It also has alot to do with their stuff being way over-priced for what it is. I suppose I could add Call of Duty and Facebook as tech-related things I avoid, too.

Re: QOTW: Which tech do you boycott?

I boycott Facebook because of its foul usage of language. The meaning of the word "friend" is becoming "someone I know or knew". You do not hang out with friends anymore, you hang out with "close friends". It is probably too late for Facebook to change its ways.

I boycott WhatsApp and similar applications that take every entry of your address book. I would have preferred if it was opt-in, or at least gave you the option. Also, some of the applications are mobile only or mainly mobile focused, so I cannot use a real keyboard to chat.

I boycott Anandtech's recommendations for OCZ SSDs, or actually most SSD reviews. I know that faster does not mean reliable anymore. OCZ got acquired by Toshiba since, and it probably has changed its ways, but you know that trust is easy to take and hard to gain.

I boycott laptops. I had enough experience with them to know they are not to be trusted. Most of the time, they are not well balanced. I am actually the only one in my office without a laptop: I work on a Linux workstation and connect to a remote Windows VM for MS Office, while most of my colleagues use a laptop to connect to a remove Linux VM, where the specialized software we use can be run.
