This info also correlates to what I've been hearing about tbh, with AMD slipping to Sept ish

Re: Nvidia Pascal graphics cards to ship in volume in July

Pascal/Polaris gonna be in time for my GPU upgrade cycle then, though unless I'm mistaken we still don't know for sure what VRAM its going to use, with a strong possibility we will get GDDR5x. Considering AMD as of their roadmap appeared to have HBM2 planned for the next release along, not this one. Hoping Nvidia have HBM2 in either the 1070 or 1080, else I may wait around a little bit for the next release with HBM2.

It sounds like pascal should be a good boost in performance anyway with the new process and all, but I think theres 2 major upgrades to GPUs in the pipeline, so releasing one without the other seems a little half baked. I guess they will release what they have on hand at the time though, if HBM2 is running behind or whatever.

Yup that's my thoughts too. I know there's always something round the corner but I'd rather wait for both the 14nm process and hbm2 before upgrading since they're big developments and I think the generations after that will be smaller increments

Re: Nvidia Pascal graphics cards to ship in volume in July

Question is if these will come with HBM2 or GDDR5X, if it's the latter it maybe worth waiting for the HBM2 cards to ship.

HBM2 won't be ready in time. Question is whether it's GDDR5X or normal GDDR5.

I mean, the likelihood is this will be P104 with something other than HBM2, but if all the tech news we've heard is to be believed, it's not impossible for them to have an HMB2 card out on July...

I still don't believe the volume would be there just yet. Next year, for high end parts, sure. Very happy to be wrong, but we'll see.

    Polaris launching in June.

    Edit!!

Lisa Su said Polaris would launch in the middle of the year in time for the "back to school season" which starts in July:

    https://translate.google.co.uk/trans...u-interview%2F

The aim is mid-2016, in particular the major in the United States back-to-school period should be available not only desktop solutions, but above all also notebook graphics chips.
So that means AMD shipping to OEMs beforehand.

She is on record saying that.

    From that article:

AMD’s Radeon 400 series will launch in June. The preview may happen at Computex which starts end of May. However the official launch will take place end of June. So we are probably looking at paper launch at Computex and hard launch with reviews later that month.
    From the Digitimes article:

Meanwhile, AMD has prepared Polaris-based GPUs to compete against Nvidia's Pascal; however, the GPUs will be released later than Nvidia's Pascal and therefore the graphics card players' third-quarter performance will mainly be driven by demand for their Nvidia products.
Seems to be a contradiction, unless AMD is getting out volume sales in OEM computers and laptops before Nvidia, and the AIB cards get launched later on.

I think Hexus might to modify their article a bit IMHO.

They are probably selling it with GDDR5X this year and an "enhanced" version with HBM2 next year. Just to maximize profits and to not let AMD get ahead of them.

Maybe they meant a nVidia 'release' such as the Pascal announcement that's already happened, so yes, it's going to be later

Nope, since Lisa Su talked about availability:

The aim is mid-2016, in particular the major in the United States back-to-school period should be available not only desktop solutions, but above all also notebook graphics chips.
It starts in July with nearly 1/3 of back to school sales happening then and 65% of purchasing decisions for the next month made then. This is according to IPSOS-MORI and Google.

For them to get them into laptops and OEM desktops,AMD need to be shipping in volume beforehand.

Digitimes is vague - shipping in volume does not mean availability in July for Pascal.

They have not said if it is bare GPUs or cards and OEMs need to build up stocks beforehand.

    Edit!!

AMD have already announced Polaris 10 and 11 and shown off slides months ago.

    Second Edit!!

    Digitimes article:

Meanwhile, AMD has prepared Polaris-based GPUs to compete against Nvidia's Pascal; however, the GPUs will be released later than Nvidia's Pascal and therefore the graphics card players' third-quarter performance will mainly be driven by demand for their Nvidia products.
    which contradicts this:

The aim is mid-2016, in particular the major in the United States back-to-school period should be available not only desktop solutions, but above all also notebook graphics chips.

I may be wrong but I though the change from GDDR5 to HBM is a completely fundamental shift? I doubt they'd engineer the chip and PCB because HBM was limited. They'd probably just wait till the next generation.

Re: Nvidia Pascal graphics cards to ship in volume in July

So,we have Lisa Su saying on record availability for laptops and probably desktops for middle of the year,ie,probably July and another site saying a June launch for Polaris,AMD showing off the chips in operation and now all of a sudden Digitimes saying Polaris won't be available for most of Q3 2016 which is up to September.

Something is quite fishy about it,just saying!

What are the likely VRAM limits of GDDR5 and GDDR5X per card?

Looking to upgrade to something with at least 8Gb VRAM in the near future.
