I love it when "hacks" like this appear, that individuals can look at a product and say "well that's restrictive.. let's improve it".
From what I've heard from developers, the Vive is much more appealing hardware-wise than the Rift. I think the head-start and marketing clout from FB that the Rift received had the potential for a lot of people to miss out on some bigger exclusives.. but this kind of thing almost levels the field again.

Looking through the code, it's fairly straightforward, and the worrying sounding "Patch" is pretty generic too - just includes an additional DLL import to the original executables.
Well solves the problem of valve not helping Oculus get the Vive on the Oculus store.
Oculus want more users on the Oculus store so good news there.
Oculus have always said the exclusives are store exclusives not hardware exclusives which is fair enough for the games they have funded.
Only bad news is for Valve as they have just lost there steam store lock in for Vive users.
As for delays my Oculus order has been delayed 2 weeks, hardly the end of the world.

Well, that makes my mind up. I for one refuse to buy an Oculus Rift. More walled gardens is not what the gaming industry needs, especially considering the hardware outlay to play VR.

interestingly, amazon uk has the rift pencilled in for a slightly more delayed arrival, as at time of writing.

Both have comparable tracking volumes, and both have effectively identical tracking performance (IMU orientation and translation fused with a 60Hz absolute optical error reference).
The primary differenced between them are
The Vive launches with motion controllers, the Rift launches with a control pad and motion controllers later this year.
The Rift has headphones built in, the Vive does not.
