    Shhhhh! It's still better than a R9 390X!!

There was a lot of noise of AMD trying to boost clockspeeds recently.Probably why. After the last leaks we had were for a 232MM2 Polaris 10 and and a 350MM2 GP104. Even taking a 10% density advantage for the process AMD is using, Nvidia is using a much larger chip than AMD this time.

Maybe AMD are hoping that 350mm^2 is rather big for a laptop.

It seems it is 332MM2,but the GK104 was around 300MM2 and the GM204 around 400MM2.

It just worries me a bit that AMD was already meant to launch these a few months ago,and now it increasingly looks like AMD and Nvidia will be BOTH launching in June.

They're both doing the sensible thing of not immediately treading on each other's toes - there's enough market for both of them. AMD are going for mainstream - that's mentioned several times in the investor call too - that'll help their bottom line the most since it also gets them console and laptop wins but they need volume. nVidia are starting with higher end to capture enthusiast margins with presumably less volume.

There's still room for a 'big' polaris 10 waiting for GDDRX of course.

I guess AMD had apple in mind when they designed Polaris. My thinking is they wanted to get the best value and the best consumption. Not expecting much of Polaris in terms of performance.
    Maybe with Vega...

I doubt it at least for the graphics side of AMD. People like Raja Koduri and Richard Huddy seem to be pretty hardcore PC enthusiasts.

But you have to look how disruptive the HD4000 series was. AMD does not need the performance crown to get decent sales - it need to get OEMs to buy their chips in large quantities and enough normal gamers to buy their cards.

Focussing on the performance crown,is better suited to Nvidia as they can subsidise those chips with the large commercial market they still mostly have.

Some more information about Polaris 10 and Polaris 11:

    http://wccftech.com/amd-polaris-10-d...-notebook-gpu/

The AMD Polaris 10 GPU has a maximum TDP of 175W but cards will actually consume much less than that. The GPU was initially built to support HBM memory but AMD chose to go the GDDR5/X route since it offers a better value currently. We will get to see HBM on AMD GPUs when Vega launches but until then, only Fury series will have HBM support. The Polaris 10 GPU is said to have 3DMark Firestrike Ultra performance around 4000 points which is about what a Radeon R9 Fury X and GeForce GTX 980 Ti score. By 4000 points, we don’t mean exactly 4000 but it’s actually quite a bit less but that’s the number we were told.

If they can (or are willing to) keep the price down then that's a mighty tempting proposition. A 980 (non-ti) thrashing card for Pitcairn like prices and power consumption would be great. nVidia are shooting for much higher it seems, and costing accordingly.

I think it will be around R9 390 to Fury level performance at 1080P and 1440P. The power consumption looks like around the GTX950 or GTX960 level with P10.

Re: AMD Polaris in Apple Mac, Sony PS4K design wins say reports

It seems that Polaris was originally designed for HBM2 but it seems it doesn't need it. Video cards sell on price as much as performance, so if it doesn't add to the performance but does add to the cost they can't really use it.

What we don't know is if the HBM2 connections are still on the die. Perhaps someone can make an HBM variant, or perhaps like the R9 285 384 bit memory bus, we will never see it. Perhaps it got removed at tape out. But perhaps if 4K panels become popular then we might see an HBM2 variant turn up.

Polaris sounds like a 980ti performance level part, so we know that can be done with GDDR5.

I guess Vega is needed for 4K monitors, but that raises the question: are people avoiding purchase of a 4K monitor because the graphics cards aren't up to it yet, and the graphics cards aren't being made because the overwhelming majority are on 1080p and don't need that sort of grunt?

Looking on Steam hardware survey (yeah I know, but couldn't find any sales figures) they don't even have a 4K catagory those users get lumped in with the very widescreen users in "other" at just under 2% of users.
