Nope. I'll wait for the custom models, probably Asus Strix.
Would I pay extra for a generic version of nVidia's latest and greatest? It's impossible to put into words how utterly unlikely that is, so let's just stick with a resounding 'NO'.
Actually, I wouldn't dream of spending money on either the GTX 1080 (or the GTX 1070, for that matter), unless it was massively on sale. nVidia makes some great GPUs, but they're obscenely overpriced. And continue to be even after the inevitable "worm in the woodwork" is found. GTX 970, I'm looking squarely at you.
At that sort of money why would you pay extra for a founders edition? No sane reason to do so.
I like the reference cooler, but is that all the extra ton gets you. I'm not sure TBH.
Remember how bad the coil whine is on the GTX970's and some of the other budget cards.
The price is higher with no added benefits.
So no.
I will wait and see what Asus will grant us.
Yes, and I plan to do so if I can get one. only because my rift will arrive around the same time they are launched, and I am too impatient to wait another month after my rift arrives before getting back into elite.
For me, it's worth it. Not that I am over the moon about paying more, but tbh early adopters pay more for pretty much every other gadget that gets released, so it was only a matter of time before graphics cards caught up with the trend.
I've been a fan of the reference Nvidia coolers of the past 3 generations, and the new iteration with the return of the vapour chamber looks good, but it's not worth that premium.
I imagine there will be plenty of non-reference coolers of both blower and open designs that will be a better value proposal to fit in with the various usage scenarios.
No. Simply not worth the cash. If we'd stop buying them the price would drop.
Not if it is more expensive than other cards that perform better. I'll be getting an EVGA version for the warranty as I have miserable luck with the longevity of Graphics Cards.
So they want an extra $100 for a GTX1080 with a metal cooler?
No is the answer to that question.
Rather than get reasonable stocks up and release later why not release early and price gouge those willing to pay.
I don't think I could justify the price of a 1080 never mind a 1080 plus some.
This is a disgusting abuse of the faithful early adopters. Never in the history of graphics cards has the reference cooler been more expensive than the partner products. And it is the usual that the reference design has a slight lead on release, they've never marketed like that before though.
I wish I was more surprised, but companies nowadays will take any opportunity they can get to bugger a consumer out of cash.
The worst thing is though is not just the premium, it's the fact that you're paying a premium for what will most likely be the absolute worst card. Has there ever been a reference that performed better than the partner models ?
I rather wait for Polaris.
I don't see the point of paying more for the same graphics performance with a cooler design that isn't really any better in airflow performance than what will be offered by other suppliers anyway. It just seems like something that people with money to burn will get. The rest of us will pick out ones with custom designs of our own choices, and save money doing so.
