Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
Quote:
Reports suggest the Xbox One Scorpio offers 6TFLOPS, and the PS4K just over 4TFLOPS.

Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
Where do you get the 4TFLOPS figure from for the PS4 neo? I thought it was going to be 5.8TFLOPS (2304 cores, 1266mhz), so if XB1 Scopio is offering a rounded 6 then they're basically identical.

Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
Hexus got it from Polygon, who got it from GiantBomb: http://www.giantbomb.com/articles/sources-the-upgraded-playstation-4-is-codenamed-ne/1100-5437/
That says 2304 cores at 911MHz (plus 8 Jaguar CPU cores @ 2.1GHz).

Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
Surely, all numbers are purely speculation at this point?
-
Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
You mean... generation 4.5...
-
Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
So perhaps PS is the SoC and XB is going down a CPU+GPU route? Intriguing.
-
Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
What's the betting that no matter how much better its going to be someone in upper management is going to find a way to hobble it. ;)
-
Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
It should be just a High End AMD Zen processors with Polaris GPU as console is a highly specialized / optimized device programming access, lightweight console OS with minimum overheads.

Would they be able to do the CPU + GPU route and maintain compatibility with all the use of HSA in current games?

And will they be able to maintain a competitive price range if indeed they do go CPU+GPU route...

Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
This will be a serious gaming system if true. A 4x performance jump would put the Xbox well into 4K gaming territory.

Not really, to run a 1080p/30fps Xbox One title at 4K/60fps would require a notional x8 fold increase in computational power.
Double the frame rate at four times the resolution.
-
Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
4x the resolution wouldn't require 4x the performance and 60 FPS is not required. If the new Xbox one is 4x the performance of the old one that allows for consoles to move to 4K.
-
Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
It's basically a new generation with backwards compatibility (like it used to be).
-
Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
This isn't really news is it? One unannounced product may be faster than another unannounced product. Possibly. In theory.
I've heard that the PS5 may be faster than the successor to the Xbox One...... :juggle:

Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
Interesting that the PS3/360 generation lasted such a ludicrously long time (holding back gaming in general in the latter years) yet this new gen seems like it'll have the quickest upgrade time in all history :)
-
Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
I think that was always going to be the case once the consoles become a PC.
-
Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
Would be interesting to see if we will see games made to run only on the +.5 version of the consoles. If it doesn't, then it should be seen as a refresh (kind of like the "Slim" edition of some past home consoles). I would expect games to keep the same settings but run at higher frame rate than having 4K games only for the new consoles. I suppose that they could release it as a "VR Edition", but I am not sure if it will be well received by early adopters of the consoles. It's not just the PS3/X360 generation that lasted a long time, but PS2/GC lasted a very long time too.

Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
If it will mean current PS4 games could be run at 60fps I'd be in line waiting for it to come out. Unless it costs >400£. Then I'd just get 1070GTX and forget about consoles.

Some games cannot even run @30 fps all the time @900p, i dont think its going to do 4k any time soon, as not even a top end cpu/gpu can do 60fps @4k
Wasn't it said it would render @4k but output @1080p

Exclusives will be the only enduring asset for consoles at this rate. PCs are the more plausible option if this trend continues, you can just upgrade a component or two when needed.

Well with 4x the performance the Xbox would do 4K on release.
What do you think Microsoft would plan to do with all that extra power?

Not at the current rate graphics card improvements are costing.

If what jamie says is true, then it would make sense to make all games capable of doing 60fps at 1080p.
And there is also VR. MS might be focussing on the HoloLens but personally I think that they have the resource to be a credible player in VR if they so wish..

That would only bring it upto around a 290x or a 970, stuff more crap on the home screen ;)

Maybe, but I can't see the console market buying into hololens. Last time a looked the price was in the thousands range.
Microsoft don't need anything like a quadruple jump in performance to run at those settings. It would be a very strange move not to shoot for 4K when you have the power too.
-
Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
If anything you mite get netflix @4k or if it could run games @4k it would only be 30fps, anyway new consoles aint going to happen anytime soon

Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
With the current CPU it could run 30FPS at 4K. With double the CPU power it could run locked at 60 assuming enough GPU power.
A jump to 6TFlops would actually be 4.5X the performance. That makes for a real beast of a system in the hands of console developers.

No not at all if it (CANNOT) even do 60fps 1080p on all games.

Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
If you have enough grunt to run 30FPS, you have enough to run 30FPS. The resolution you run at is largely irrelevant.

Course it is as 4k is 4times more pixels than 1080p.
Why would anyone want to game @30fps

Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
Well you're assuming 30FPS is some kind of hard limit, but thats probably not the case.
Lots of people play around 30FPS. Thats generally considered playable.

Run native 920 or 1080 without the upscaling?

Yeah maybe. 1920x1080 at uber ultra settings, and/or run at 4K resolution.

No its not some hard limit, yeah console.

It will be upscaled, just like using VSR or DSR on PC.

Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
With that much power developers would push for 4K. No need to up scale.
-
Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
Imagine you could update the console's GPU yourself like a PC.

IDK i can't really see it myself, IIRC the Xbone struggles to run some games in 720p@30FPS.

I guess they can change specs more frequently when they are making profit on hardware from day 1.

Re: Will Microsoft outgun Sony with its generation 1.5 console?
The XBox One has just been cut to $299. MS are obviously keen to sell off a few of the standard model xbo before E3.
