Very interesting article, bit out of the blue for Hexus but I'm glad to see it, thanks!

Two things stood out for me:

By making it safer we can take more risks, yes. But I don’t think I take bigger risks. I never want to depend completely on the technology, but it makes mountaineering safer.

I had exhausted my willingness to suffer and still be able to make good decisions

Perhaps it would be fair to say the role of technology isn't necessarily about addressing risks directly, but it's that last bit - being able to make good decisions. Technology helps inform those decisions, so allows for a better assessment of the risks.
