If it's financially beneficial to BT they will do something, just like any business, which means that they don't actually give a rats bum about the consumer. This country should have fibre from top to bottom and it should have had it years ago. Oh well.
BT may not care about the consumer but the government sure does, in the wrong way IMO, the The Digital Economy Bill is a mishmash of bad legislation sprinkled with just enough good things to get people welcoming the changes.
I just had a quick browse, and it seems to me that the bandwidth provided by optic fibre in the UK is still largely asymmetric. Is there a technological reason for that? I always thought that optic fibre was capable of symmetric bandwidth, and the ones I've experienced overseas tend to be that way.
It's asymmetric basically because people still download far more than they upload. The gap was narrowing then the massive uptake in catch up tv and streaming has widened it again
Old puter - still good enuff till I save some pennies!
Still think this country has one of the most ridiculous internet speeds in Europe. And don't even gem me started on that line rental... This existed on other European countries, but they stopped it in the majority something around 15 years ago... Yay Brexit!
We actually have really good Internet speeds, it's just GCHQ can't keep track of everyone so the telco's have agreed to slow things down so as not to overwhelm them.

My broadband speed - 750 Meganibbles/minute
Mine actually went the opposite way to normal. When I switched from ADSL Max to BT Fibre they estimated a speed of 19-22mb. The day it activated it was 25mb and has now crept up to 28.67mb. Chuffed to bits with that. Last night I downloaded a 1.9Gb file and it only took 11 minutes and that was with the wife on her pc downstairs at the same time.
