You don't HAVE to upgrade every generation... but eventually the improvements stack up and it's worth it, each upgrade tips that balance for a few more people...

Well its going to be Zen or Kaby Lake for me my 3570k is getting a bit behind with some tasks.

To be fair my next pc will be more work focused and so I'd be looking at 8-10 cores.

If AMD can give me multithreaded performance (this is what counts for me) that comes close to intel's 8 core machines (10 is likely still going to be too expensive) but saves me a large chunk of cash then I will likely go that direction. If intel can offer up a better performance per cost against AMD then I'll likely look at intel.

It really is that simple especially considering my work is shifting towards GPU rendering anyways and I'd likely be better spending the difference on a better gpu.

Interestingly this matches my thinking, I am running a business in photography/videography. Last time round the business was just begining and the 8350 was the better for the business but not great for gaming so I ended up with the 3570k.

This time round if AMDs multicore performance is better (per £) and gaming doesn't take a nose dive (IPC looks good) then AMD have me.

Yes, I'm sure Web surfing needs more CPU power to run even faster, My i7-2600k seems to be a super chip that does everything i need it to do such as open complex, highly intensive paint & notepad documents lol and play the latest game. I mean can you believe it, it Runs Cyrsis LOL

To most people this does apply to which I agree my 3570k is up to all the tasks you list.

I guess you are aiming at the fact things haven't got massively faster since sandy bridge to which I agree, but all those small increments make a big difference when you skip a few models.

Last couple of years motherboard/chipset capabilities age much faster than cpu.

True percy the little increments do make a difference. In your case they will make a bigger impact since your into video editing & such. Skylake-X the 10 core platform would be better for you when it comes out in 2H 2017 as your already using an intel 3570k u better off with that instead.

This is the first time I have waited 4-5 years for something to tax my system and still haven't found anything to make an upgrade from a 3770k or 1230v2 worthwhile.

At the current rate, I doubt I'll be upgrading until a motherboard dies.....not that that's a bad thing, it's just odd seeing generation after generation of CPU and not buying one!

I agree, but I don't have an unlimited budget, an 8c 16t AMD or Intel will give me sizable gains in a realistic budget.

Well summed up. I was used to buying a new PC every year, year on year, for a long time. Now it's quite strange how we've just settled down and desktop processors have almost stopped evolving.

In fact the processor is almost boring when creating a new system, it's just a standard component you select instantly with zero emotion. Now the interest is in UW / 4k Monitors, GPU's, SSDs... Even selecting a keyboard, case or motherboard is more stimulating than the processor.
