Re: Steam update to enforce use of genuine game screenshots

I dont know if Im unusual with my experience, but when I go to the Steam store page of a game the first thing I'm usually presented with is a video which autoplays. As far as I understand it these new rules dont affect video? So the developer is free to continue to include concept art or whatever they want in the videos? I seldom look through the screenshots, usually I just watch the video for a taster and if that looks interesting its on to youtube to try to find a lets play or review video. If I still like the game, I go through the steam reviews and then if nothing worrying comes up I go straight to purchase. The screenshots have absolutely no influence on my buying decision. The only reason I would even look at them would be perhaps to grab something to use as a desktop wallpaper.

    Probably, yes... I presume so.

That's precisely why I look at the screenies, as the vids are often cinematic stuff, whereas the screens show the game and in many cases I can go, "Nope, Isometric RTS, not interested, move on" before the video has even gotten started.

Re: Steam update to enforce use of genuine game screenshots

They need to introduce the policy into videos as well to be fair.

I'm not sure why the general law we have in the UK for game adverts (i.e. the whole "not in game footage") doesn't apply elsewhere.

If they just labelled what was truly in game and what wasn't it really wouldn't bother me that much.

But at least this is a step in the right direction and will hopefully avoid another No Mans Sky episode!

A lot of those are cinematic game trailers, though, which could be either cutscenes or just marketing. It's artistic, so you can't really clamp down on it without crippling most adverts in existence.
