This is great news, DX needs to die ASAP because Microsoft use it far to often to bribe gamers into using their latest spyware OS. Vulkan forever ! etc.
That' great. Will test it for my project.
I would love to see this become the new standard so people can ditch windows 10, only reason I have it is because of dx12.
Vulkan... another item that I didn't want installed onto my nice system. I didn't even have the OPTION to install. When will people realise that these companies are taking liberties!?
P.s. Why would people ditch Windows 10? What are you actually going to get when moving to another platform? It's not as if Windows 10 is absolutely evil or awful. Oh, wait, it's cool to say that stuff.
Seems pretty naive to wish death to DirectX, if you ask me. Healthy competition amongst API/middleware helps to push boundaries and stimulate real innovation. Be thankful to *all* players. It's very easy to be complacent, when no competition exists.
I won't get too dragged down with the Windows 10 'spyware' debate, but I think there's certainly a lot of tinfoil hat wearing going on. There are a group of 'purist' users who have legitimate concerns about transit of even the most trivial of personal data, and that's perfectly okay, but the majority of people just don't particularly care, and that's also okay. Live and let live, I say. The whole situation reminds me of the attitude towards Origin, in many ways. And the original hysteria surrounding DRM back in the early noughties. In summary: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

;)
I look forward to Vulkan gaining acceptance, as I dislike having to dual-boot Windows 10 to play certain games.
Direct-X was born as a backwards step from OpenGL and has generally been struggling to catch up. It did catch up, somewhere around DX9 I think, and briefly held a lead until Mantle came out. Direct X does not help innovation, and from the grief I am still having under Windows 10 it isn't helping compatibility either.
Edit: I just noticed my task bar has gone blank. I am starting to really really loath Windows 10, I had none of this crud in 7.
Problem is that OpenGL got completely lost during a time when they could've been taking advantage of how much of a mess Microsoft were making of things with Vista. I'm a developer at a AAA game studio (which will remain nameless ;) and we don't even particularly give OpenGL a second glance, outside of an occasional Mac release. Writing Direct3D code is altogether more pleasant than OpenGL, from my own personal experience. I think the entire API is better designed. Having said that, I'm generally a little biased towards the Xbox/PC platform anyway.
I have no experience with Mantle, so I can't comment on that.
