been using barclays for years, i only ever go into a branch to pay in a tax rebate or get a new debit card made

down side, is the app is 100+ mb, but they give you a free pinsentry card reader, so you can reinstall it whenever you like without going into a branch, and not to good with a contract phone, telecoms only leave you witth 200mb after adding all the facebook and twitter junk you can't uninstall without rooting your phone, then the barclays app won't work on a rooted phone

I can't foresee any circumstances in which I would, no.

Online banking with my main bank, One that's been around since 1911 is good enough for me!
These new start ups have got to prove themselves before earning some trust with other people's hard earned.

I am more concerned about how these new "banks" or credit unions are regulated.

Well, so far, all it is is a pre-paid mastercard with an app... so nothing special... they are saying they are planning to launch current accounts soon... I'm planning to build a space station like DS9 orbiting jupiter soon.

Well, I guess if that is it, then I do. I have a prepaid foreign currency MasterCard and an app to manage it, but it can be accessed from regular web browser.

I do use internet banking apps with a 'conventional' account - and as that fulfils all my banking needs, I see no reason to change for the sake of it.

Yes, I have my suspicions that a simple one word answer isn't what you were looking for though.

Hopefully to save time, the online aspect of banking isn't what prevents me from using an app to do my banking, it's how exposed the device I'm doing that banking on that counts, a desktop computer using an OS I control kept behind locked doors is very different than a device that can be lost/stolen using an OS that I have little control over.

Yes, I suppose I should amplify my reply. I have assessed the risk with a mobile device, which has a screen lock/biometric access and the app itself has another pin. I can also disable that device remotely so my assessment is that should the device be locked or stolen, I probably have sufficient time to notify my service provider to get the device disabled and/or lock/wipe it remotely.

As with most things, it's an individual risk/benefit assessment.

Re: QOTW: Would you consider switching to an app-based bank?

Recently got my Monzo card for my trip to Sweden and thanks to no charges abroad, I've been getting better rates than I did on cash. Plus the app itself is really handy, if I lose my card permanently or even get worried and find it later I can quickly freeze and unfreeze my card instantly. Just needs Android Pay now!

Re: QOTW: Would you consider switching to an app-based bank?

If it's smartphone/tablet only then heck no. I really don't trust a mobile device to do anything financial securely, so for me it's definitely "last resort". That said, I do have one of those foreign currency cards, so the corresponding app on the phone is useful.

Then again, I'm old enough to want the assurance that there's someone I can "go yell at" when the bank screws up. So a bank that doesn't even have a decent customer service hell desk (typo deliberate) isn't one that I'm going to bother with.

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

Obviously I can only answer that for myself, but that answer would be no.

Moreover, my accounts are locked down centrally so that any attempt to set up internet banking will, firstly, fail, and secondly, set fraud alert bells going.

Even I can't set it up. If I want internet banking, I have to attend a pre-arranged meeting at a specified branch, in person, with specified ID including, but not limited to, passport, so as to release that lockdown. This is due to previous (unsuccessful) attempts to set up internet banking by fraudsters, promting me to tell the bank that I DO NOT want internet banking, so if anybody attempts to set it up, it WILL be fraudsters.

Note: I'm not suggesting anybody else should refuse internet banking. It's a personal trade-off between utility and risk. For me, the utility is zero so any risk at all is too much. YMMV, obviously.
