I suppose it's because of what our expectations of what XFR could be, i maybe wrong but from what i gather normal overclocking would be limited by the least stable core whereas XFR seems to be more precise and targeted, iirc it works in 25Mhz increments and i seem to remember reading it targets the most stable core.

None at the moment, I'll be more interested once the reviews come in

Re: QOTW: Which AMD Ryzen CPU has caught your eye?

I'm keeping a watchful eye out of curiosity and a hope AMD get this right , putting competition back in this market place to the benefit of us , the consumers. Intel have had it their way far too long and their pricing is way too high. Whatever camp you are in , this competition is needed. Me , I'm still stuck with my Phenom 11 X4 965be , RD5770 on a decent Asus board.
Been looking these past few years about upgrading and have seen no point as this set up is rock solid and well fast enough for me with what I do ( No gaming ). All later chips have not warranted an upgrade for little gain , I have been given a complete rig with an FX 6100 and single core performance is better with my Phenom and no voltage fluctuations , prefer the Phenom. That aside these new Ryzen chips look tempting if the leaks so far pan out and newer connectivity at motherboard level is getting me to seriously look at an upgrade now. Always favoured AMD for value for money and looking at the specs so far I'd probably go for the R5 1600X , more of a dilemma is motherboard choice. Always liked Gigabyte down the years but keep reading about VRM issues across FX boards , would probably favour Asus as this board has been rock solid and I got great support from them when I thought I had issues.

if i go for a ryzen on my next build, i'd get the top one for longevity. if i haven't the cash, the 1600x would be on my radar

16/17/18X depending upon money and performance as it requires a new motherboard ( want to go ROG again) and new ram(which keeps going up in price atm).

What's the point of upgrading for no performance increase? More modern I/O? Do you actually need anything faster than USB 3.0? That sounds pretty wasteful to me...

The 1600X looks might attractive, but even a 4c8t SKU is an option if the clocks are decent. Most likely I'll go 6c12t, though. It's about time my Core2Quad was put out to pasture.

Was merely answaring the question of which of them has caught my eye, as the OP asked. I dont need an upgrade

My rig is currently 5 years old? so i am expecting it to cease up at one point. And seeing the prices on intel CPU's vs Ryzen. I would be saving a lot of money going the AMD way.

I can currently run the games i play at 1080p with no problem, while having a browser open with 50-100 tabs, email client is active, and there's about 15 processes in the task bar running.

With Intel slacking off on the big performance boosts per generation, and AMD having been behind for some years now. The software i use has been equally keeping the slow pace in requirements.

I dont need higher perfomance atm. But that could change in the future if AMD finally makes Intel sweat a little

As for new I/O's, i dont really need more than USB 3.0, but it would be nice, since i do make regular backups. My monthly bit-by-bit check takes about 22 hours to complete on the external USB drive.

I can't make any real determination about viability without seeing the motherboards. AM3+ is a dust-covered disaster as far as board availability goes.

Re: QOTW: Which AMD Ryzen CPU has caught your eye?

I haven't been considering an upgrade, but a conversation with Ferral got me thinking about it (gee, thanks, bud ).

Anything I buy is going to be a significant upgrade, and I need to have a long hard think about cores, clocks, cache, platform, other needed system components and, yes, overall budget.

My instant reaction is around 1400X or 1600X BUT .... given that it'll be pretty much a system ourchase (mobo, cpu, RAM, etc) then the marginal cost of going up or down a notch or two is a small proportion of total outlay, so buying for longevity suggests maybe up a notch.

In other words, which one? Beats the stuff outta me.

    Lol. Words, in my mouth.

My thought is that the 1400X is 4c/8t (i7) with only 100mhz off the headline speed of the 1800X. Half the cache too, so... that's something to consider, but I don't think it's going to hold it back so much. 4 cores should make it easier to find a good chip without a duff core holding it back and produce less heat so single thread performance can be pushed harder.

Price wise, it's (supposedly) going to be around $200 for the chip and $150 for a "good but not flagship" motherboard. That... should (after initial price gouging) settle nicely into a tidy £280ish niche. At that point... a top end i7 + decent board for £280... yes please. The equivalent Intel parts come in around £450...

Agreed though that taking up a notch or 2 for longevity might be the way forward. I've had no issue sitting on this 2600k for about 5 years now (bought in the early days before the Intel chipset sata bug became known about, originally with a P67 board). Will see how it all pans out. I'll be around the summer before I'm buying.

Re: QOTW: Which AMD Ryzen CPU has caught your eye?

I'm very keen to seensome reliable o/c tests on the X and non-X parts. Would love to be able to push an R5 1300 up a bit to match a 1400X.
Otherwise I'd start with 1400X and then, after a couple of years, see what 6-cores I can find on ebay as a drop in upgrade. So will just need to choose a mobo with some legs.
Quite excited by all the leaks so far.

If I had the cash, it would be one of the 8 cores. More than likely be one of the 6 cores. Also depends on how much the Mobo's cost too
