I thought it was a "no chipset" arrangement, rather than a dedicated chipset? So you stick the CPU in the bare board and all the IO hangs off the built in southbridge.

Besides, even with a "dedicated" chipset, I imagine there'll be one or two mITX boards with the full chipsets as well, just to pack a few extras in that aren't available off the SoC - maybe not the X370 (which would be rather wasted), but the B350 wouldn't surprise me at all...

I'm confused about this too. Is it tied to my MS Account or the hardware ?

Since the Anniversary update you've been able to choose to link Windows 10 licenses to your Microsoft account. I'm not entirely sure if they retain a link to the hardware as well, though, or if they're just linked to your account and therefore transferable.

If you install Win 10 on a new computer without a digital entitlement or other license, Activation gives you the option to say you've changed the hardware and pick which computer you've upgraded from the list of licenses linked to your account - but I haven't tried transferring one yet, so I've no idea what actually happens!

Re: QOTW: Which AMD Ryzen CPU has caught your eye?

That's some encouraging news though as to be honest I thought it was tied to the mainboard. And adding the cost of another licence didn't really appeal so hopefully will just be able to change hardware and update Microsoft.

Edit : Looked into this and my copy is a digital licence locked to my account and from the Microsoft help page :-

"If you made a significant hardware change to your device (such as replacing the motherboard) Windows 10 might no longer be activated. If you're running Windows 10 (Version 1607) and added your Microsoft account and linked it to the digital license on your device, you can use the Activation troubleshooter to reactivate Windows. "

    So might be ok then
    Jon

That'd tie in with the screens I saw last time I changed hardware in a desktop. Unfortunately, the PC hadn't been upgraded to 1607 and the license wasn't registered to my account, so I had to do a bit of a workaround.

But if that's accurate, it essentially means that - for the time being at least - one Windows 10 license can follow you around through multiple PC upgrades. I guess that the improvements in activation and license monitoring means MS are happy that they can identify when someone tries to use the same license on two machines simultaneously, so they're happy for people to transfer that license between computers. That's good news for enthusiasts

Yes absolutely as it would be a major upgrade for me needing the mainboard, cpu and ram I didn't really want to have to buy another licence and wasn't going to chance one of those cheap key sites.

1700X most likely for me, but I'm waiting for more benchmarks.

or they really don't care and will run with it till win 10 gets more sales or just used in more pc's .. that gives them there we have %56 win 10 cover .. and bragging rights ..
