Cant say i have a need for a 4k blu-ray player for movies.
but 128GB discs for backup of data sounds neat.

Re: Pioneer releases BDR-211UBK Blu-ray burner, UHD Blu-ray player
It's neat but media is quite costly.
Edit: Not quite as costly as I remember, down to about $6 per triple layer disc. Still in terms of price per GB it's cheaper to buy single layer, but might be worth it to save on number of discs.

Even though I have a rig that would support this I don't like the DRM - is it really purely anti piracy or just some back handed deals to try to sell more hardware? Surely they could have found a way to protect it without the need for the latest CPU's and GPU's (correct me if I'm wrong)

Oh, a disk burner, how retro :)

The storage potential is nice, my 2209/209 supports BDXL formats but the price is prohibitively expensive, honestly you might as well buy a hard drive or two and back up that way.

Yep. SL BD-R do currently have a better price/Gb ratio over HD, but only just. I prefer archiving to optical media rather than HD - many years of experience with decent branded media I've never had a "failure" and I've had a couple of "archive" drives die on me.
I can't see the higher capacity Blu ray media coming down in price, it was the same with SL/DL DVD media - the dual layer format was very stubborn in its pricing.

AFAIK you need the latest CPU because only they come with hardware 10-bit HEVC decoding, PlayReady 3.0's integration into hardware has largely been driven by content creators.

The future of "discs" is doomed, I don't see much point to invest much in it.

Would like one for my HTPC but the rest of the machine isn't up to spec, will leaves it with its Blu-ray/HD-DVD drive for a little longer.

Blu ray sales are doing okay. The quality of blu ray playback vs streaming is quite massive and I think consumers know that.

I already have several hard drives for backup, but i like to keep atleast one backup on a different media :)
USB flash drives and SD card havent had a good lifespan for me, and tape drives tend to be too expensive for me.
...and i dont trust the cloud with my personal data.

Indeed whilst I love streaming for casual viewing / TV shows ill take a blu ray any day where I can.

Not quite sure what is new with these drives, other than the "Ultra HD Blu-ray" logo and the bundled PowerDVD software. AFAIK, Ultra HD Blu-ray is just BDXL, which my 4 year old BDR-S08XLT can do as well. All the DRM stuff is in the other components.

No thanks, on the "eggs in one basket" principle.
