Noisey and don't work well in anything like normal lighting.

Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
They cost a bomb, you need a screen and you need to draw the curtains.
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
TV is in the corner. Projection would look weird.

Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
Is this a serious question, Hexus?
Review - BenQ W1210ST short-throw gaming projector:
Hexus says, "Build quality is solid, as you would expect on a unit priced at around £850. A replacement lamp costs around £250".
Hexus also says, "It's now eminently possible to buy a 50in, 1080p TV for £300 or so, and even stepping up to a 4K resolution is possible for under £500".
£850 (+£250 if it goes wrong) versus £500.
Why do you think I'm not using a high-quality projector...?
The actual answer is mainly that I'm saving for VR and for a 27" 1440p monitor to fill the gap while I do... but still!!

Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
My bedroom has the ideal setup for this (being an internal room with no windows). I've got a 100in motorised screen that drops down from the ceiling, and an Epson projector roughly equivalent to the one in this article, with a Logitech 5.1 system I handily had lying around unused. I didn't get much change from £1200 for the whole setup (money I probably shouldn't have spent, in hindsight), but zero regrets - GTA 5 is nothing short of eye-watering on it.
The bulbs *are* expensive but for the amount of time I actually spend gaming these days, I don't think it'll be a problem. I might run about 5 hours per week, at most. The only slight issue I have is the heat output - that thing is like a heater.
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
Last I heard the bulbs were very expensive to replace. So it is the ongoing cost for me.
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
When I've tried home/office projector systems, I've found I've suffered quite badly from chromatic aberation type effects (separation of red/green/blue) which makes the image less than pleasant to watch as compared with a nice TV (my preference being Plasma, although I recall seeing some kind of artifact [green hue?] in motion when first buying plasma). Probably get used to it, but with the convenience issue (where to mount projector, screen etc) and light level control, it just seems a lot of faff for something that might well be rather disappointing.
For what its worth, I also tend to prefer good home viewing (home theatre) to the majority of cinemas experiences.
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
Loudness. A friend of mine got a projector last year, and it was glorious to watch movies and play games at 60fps on a 100" screen. Immediately, I wanted a 4k projector, not just for games but as a complete monitor replacement. While staying there, I had my computer with me so I could still work, and I loved being able to plug in and use it for that. It would be very liberating to free up that space on my desk* and do my professional work on a grand scale. I don't think the issue of needing to replace the bulb now and then would put me off, given the massive daily enjoyment of this kind of tech.
However, those things hot, and their fans are noisy. I'm in audio production, so I want to cut down extraneous noise from everything if I can. If someone could make one of these with silent fans, or use some amazing combination of heatsinks, liquid cooling and silent fans to keep them running at a near silent rate, I'm in.
* If this idea of freeing up space puzzles anyone, given what the article says, many projectors will still make a perfect picture when placed at a coffee table level. They can be aimed upwards, and then you make an adjustment to skew the image back to a rectangle. So I could have it out of sight under my desk.

Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
tiny house, no space on the ceiling, wouldn't be able to hide the cabling anyway so a TV as big as the wall (tiny house tiny wall :D ) would be nice.

They cost a lot to buy, a lot to run and anyway, I simply don't want one.
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
I must own something completely different then what theses people are commenting on... mine is not noisy, Does works great with lights on (better off), has zero input lag that i can tell.. Was not expensive found mine on CL for under $800 way cheaper then 120" lcd TV...

Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
Most games i play, i prefer to use mouse/keyboard. The "couch" gaming controllers still arent quite to my liking.
As for not using one for cinema. Mostly i been holding back due to noise from the fan in the projecotrs, although at work we just got some new Epson short-throw projectors, that are really really quiet. So i might actually finally buy one.
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
Tvs are alot better, aren't awkward to place, are priced better and don't require certain lighting conditions to look normal.
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
1. Lack of space. 2. Cost. 3. I just don't want or need one.
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
Bulb cost is still the main issue for me - though for my gigs the other half uses a projector, pc and VJ software to live video mix for the bands/artists and it can look great. Mind you the £3k lighting rig is pretty ace too ;)
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
The noise, simply put, that's one of the worst things about projectors that you never really understand until you've bought one and are sitting there watching/playing (especially at night).
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
cost, space, setup/calibration issues particularly relating to space and placement of screen and projector, and not having complete darkness during the day
i have a bunch of projectors that are good for playing around with, some of the newer cheap models and a couple of ex school projectors that aren't proper HD but have a decent picture. they impress people when projecting stuff on the walls but the picture is far from the quality of my tv. you get 65" 4k tellys for under a grand these days and they work well in day or night. unless you have a specialised room or big living room and fork out for good gear and proper setup, or you don't care about the qualtiy and want a picture bigger than 65" then you are usually better going for the big screen tv. you can get 75" tv's for about £1500 from time to time
if you want a cheap and chearful setup, you can get a second hand school projector for £20 and a 80" screen and have a setup for about £60/70 - obviously needing the amp/speaker and source player
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
I'd love one. But I'd also love the house you need for 1. Most here are brits, our houses tend to be smaller than across the pond, projectors just aren't feasible.
If I had the room I would have one in a heartbeat. As for noise issues, you mount it in the ceiling for a reason :P
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
Wow! So much negative feedback vs projector.
Wife wouldn't let me put a telly in the "Parlour" as she thought it would look ugly - a large room downstairs, which is basically reserved for when vicar pops in. I suggested a remote control drop down screen and projector then a few weeks later we were in Richer Sounds and an InFocus 720P projector was on their ex-demo-clearance list. It hadn;t even been powered on, and we managed to get it at £700 (I believe it was on for £1200!!!!)
Sure, it gets hot and the bulbs do cost a packet, but fast forward 9 years and we've still got our projector setup and still do movie nights. Wife was reticent before the purchase, but now it's a real selling point, especially when we do house parties - being ceiling mounted, no-one can knock it over and everyone can see the 102" screen - it's still got a bit of the wow factor even now, despite it only being 720P!
Compare this with the 42" screens we've had in the other room, we've on our 3rd telly in the same period, making that £700 "investment" not as bad as we thought, plus second hand models of the projector have been coming up for sale on ebay for around the £100 mark making me a little less nervous about the price of a replacement bulb.
In daylight it's not great and it does warm the room, but with the lights off and blinds closed, we get year round enjoyment from it and it now allows us to make use of a room which we'd have very little use for - a luxury I know and appreciate all too well.
I wouldn't game on a big screen, but for media consumption, and the way which tools like Plex have come on, it's been great!

Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
Already use a prjector. Its great, and the current update of my optoma can be had for less than 500 quid, and the bulbs for around 90.
A bulb lasts somewhere around 5-6000 hours. Thats a long time.
picture is just under 170 inches, or 4.3 metres or 3 63in tvs wide.
How much is a 63in tv these days?

Yeah, but apart from that ..... ? :D
For me, it's that the cost isn't justified for gaming, and I couldn't use one as a TV replacement without a massive redesign of our TV room layout, and redecoration, due to extensive wall-mounted furniture.
I'd love one for gaming use, but for that alone, the cost is too high. Way too high.
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
Noise and cost would be the stumbling blocks for me. But saying that, the idea of having a projector for movie nights does have a lot of appeal.
The only TV in the house is a somewhat old 50in plasma that to this day provides excellent picture quality. Thoroughly enjoy using it, but the wall adjacent to where the TV is happens to be blank, large and only slightly off white in colour. It's crying out for a projector so I'm eager to try one.
Trouble is, I'd only use it occasionally for the odd movie night, so it would have to be reasonably cheap, very quiet and also tidy - the wife would not want wires going around the room.
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
impractical for all the above reasons.

Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
My distinct lack of a high-quality projector is what is stopping me from using one. The only way this would change is if I got one for free.

I'm thinking the type of person who'd be bothered to put up with a projector is the same type of person who can't deal with instant coffee because they think their french press etc is sooo much better than instant coffee. So I think a snob lol. I think alot of people would like it if they had a spare room or a shed to convert into a cinema/gaming room.

I PC game from my couch every night using a wireless keyboard and mouse.. I have zero issues.. Also i have no clue why everyone keeps speaking of "fan noise" its only audible when nothing is playing.. mine is 5 feet above my head and I hear my computer fans more than I notice the projector..

Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
For me its the darks... even in the best posible lighting that doesn't involve me smoaking like a birmingham chimley in the 1900's its just the blacks ain't black ........... they are grey.
That comined with the need to focus the darn thing and the fact it's never quite right even after you spend an hour doing it.....
Not for me

Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
The simple fact that I have no desire whatsoever to use a projector instead of an actual monitor or TV.
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
Have you seen the dark grey or even black projector screens that produce "BLACK" blacks? todays home projectors have more than enough lumens to produce great contrast.. And im guessing you prefer watching movies at home as opposed to a movie theater (which have more power and are able to use silver colored screens and still produce BLACKS) because of this "gray" blacks issue?

Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
Outside of the lack of space, I'd say:
• Cost
• Noise
• Lack of need
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
* cost = to cost of owning a "normal" led, lcd, oled or any other type of screen.. in fact its cheaper inch for inch. how much are 120inch tv's these days?
* Noise = a single side mounted 2-4 inch fan.... how many fans are on your computer? how loud is that?
* lack of need= Do any of us "need" a moving picture entertainment device, of any shape size or cost?
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
For me, the bulbs being expensive is the main factor. I am also quite happy with just a 22" screen.
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
Only use I could see is if you have a big room you want to project movies in with a THX system or the likes, else current 42" to 60" TVs would do just nicely for that as it is.
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
I'm not sure the bulbs are really as expensive as people seem to imagine. I can't speak for all projectors, but the replacement bulbs for my projector (Epson EH-TW5350 - roughly equivalent to the projector in this article) cost about £60. Hardly bank-breaking when you consider it lasts up to 7,500 hours - that's over 4 years of gaming 5 hours per day, in theory. Even it manages half that, I'll still be happy.
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
I am moving too often, and I worry that they may be a bit too fragile. It's actually the same reason I do not own a TV, nor a desktop.
I actually made projector work in a small studio when I was in London. Yes, I had to re-organise my room to make it work, but I loved it. That was 7 years ago, and after that, I simply wasn't wow-ed by any display until I saw an 65" OLED curved TV. And I haven't looked at any recent projector for comparison. And those things actually cost more than my projector/screen/speaker setup. Granted, at the very top of the line projector can cost more, but many flagship models of very high quality cost less.
The only other reason I might skip on a projector is if I wanted to game competitively (which I don't). While I was fine with fighting games, I find it easier to focus my attention in FPS on a smaller screen. Though it is definitely more immersive on a bigger screen.
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
· Cumbersome and difficult to place
· Requirement for a blank wall or pull down screen
· Noisy
· Power consumption
· Cost
· Most importantly: terrible contrast in normal conditions
· Almost always an addition to a TV
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
I looked into this a while back, but nothing at 120Hz+ was a deal breaker (aside from the space, heat, noise, initial and ongoing cost, lighting requirements and lack of utility for content production...)
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
I have considered one for the cellar when we get it converted properly, but I've been spoiled with a decent Plasma screen for the last few years and every projection setup just doesn't compare in terms of image/colour quality even in perfect lighting conditions.
Not so bad for background TV/Sports - but for films and gaming I don't think I'll bother.
I don't particularly like the aesthetics of having a large white painted wall, or a roll-down screen either.
And lastly, my house is very old and dusty, and the projectors highlight every speck in the air.
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
Having to install them at work (a school) was enough to put me off for life. While I appreciate ours aren't £1,000 of high quality projector, I still hate the bloody things.
-
Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
I have only once seen a decent projector setup that made me think I should consider such a thing for myself...
However, this was a three-projector rig casting images onto a surround-view screen, mounted above half a cockpit that was taken from a crashed Cessna. The owner is a flight sim enthusiast and has built his own simpit in a spare wing of his house!

If you have the money, why not... He'd gotten each of the instruments working just like the real thing, although a few were screens rather than the originals, but you had to see the backs of them to tell!
He was also working on a helicopter sim setup, which he was machining up himself!

Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
As a former projector engineer my reasons are as follows.
I know the company who deals with 75% of UK onsite and refurbished equipment ( I used to work for them) and know what you can wind up with outside the grace period if you need a refurbished unit.
Noise can be an issue unless you buy a really big unit.
They are as eco as a tyre fire with the heat they kick out, wasted energy in the warmer months!
Maintenance, You have to clean filters regular and that isn't easy if it is ceiling mounted, or like the BenQ i won, no filter so it will eventually build up inside. Then lamp replacement costs are the price of a 42" TV!
LCD vs Colour wheel, colour wheel is horrible for home cinema, cheap and poor colours, DLP chips overheat and break easily. LCD is better but then you have to factor in after 3-5 years the image will not be as good so an extended warranty is needed, after that you are buying a new one.
Price, I would need to spend at least £2500 to get what I wanted!

Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
Hmm. Hmmmmmm.
Because my TV was £350? Because there's nowhere in my front room to project to? Because they are prohibitively expensive to run? There's a lot of reasons, a lot.

Re: QOTW: What is stopping you from using a high-quality projector?
lol why i do not use projectors because it looks really crappy and out of focus.
there is not even one reason at all to spend a small fortune on a kinda useless projector system.
colors look bleak so this article is a joke, i do not even want to play games on my tv as well.
why you say because i love the sharp details in my games so why would i use a inferior medium to look at a game which looks awesome on my monitor.
i really don't care of people call me old school, but a tv or projector is crap
