Seems like an odd decision.

For several years a raspberry pi,a custom OS image and some illigally downloaded ROM's has been the only easy way to get to play old Nintendo games in the living room.

Then Nintendo finally made the classic mini...a legal way to play them, and now they are taking it away?

Only reason i can think of is whatever their next console is, they dont want the mini to compete with it for playing the classic games.

Nintendo missed a trick by not utilizing the slot part as an SD card based mini game cart reader! I imagine they will release an updated version so that you can buy mini versions of the game carts seperately and then do the same with the SNES and N64.

Now that's the way to go retro! I'd buy all of these.

wouldnt a SD card based cart system make it too easy to copy the games?

Well any sort of solid state media replicating the game carts would do. I just used SD cards as an example.

Very likely imo - we know that Virtual Console for the switch is due in a month or two, and I think they want to try and shift copies of mario/zelda etc on there over the summer. They will bring the mini nes back at some point (and hopefully a snes equivalent) but will want to sell digital copies in between

Plus it helps Nintendo's current business plan of limiting availability of all of their "current gen" (so to speak) hardware...

Well, I hope they now release a SNES and then a N64 version of these mini consoles. My only concern is that they pulled this so they can place previous consoles libraries on their online store exclusive for Switch users to try and boost sales of that console. But who knows, it's Nintendo after all.

I'd have considered a Mini NES, but there's no way I'm buying three mini retro-consoles just so I can play old games, when I have a high-ish end gaming PC with more resolution and power than the Mrs can shake her TV-watching stick at!!

What they'd be better off doing is releasing one retro-box that can handle all their earlier console games and has a uniform (proprietary, if they don't want to go generic) port, into which you can plug the various different controllers for those that insist on an N64 one for N64 games, a SNES one for SNES games, etc... if sufficient market even existed, that is.

I'd have expected so, yes.
