It's one thing to say your not going to support newer hardware, it’s a whole new ball game when you publish an update that actively blocks further updating, and don't even get me started on how Microsoft botched the update and people are finding 6th gen CPUs (Carrizo) are also being blocked.
So wish there was an alternative out there other than Linux.

I can see a lawsuit coming in the US....they do like to sue over things after all and to be fair in this situation I can kind of understand a lawsuit.
A company is actively blocking updates, which lets be honest is to 'force you onto windows 10', during a time when it should really be fully supporting all available hardware that has driver support etc because the OS is still being maintained.
You could also argue it's actively making your hardware insecure by not supplying security updates too.... Now windows 7 I can understand but windows 8.1, which actually I've been shafted with myself because they changed one requirements and my x2 939 cpu wasn't supported even though it was more than capable of running the OS, should still be offering support for new cpu's imo.
I wonder how long it will be before someone develops some code that mis-reports the processor type?

I think MS is just testing the the EU at this point, to see what they can get away with. I imagine this is a trial to see whether they can require mandatory hardware upgrades with Windows 10 updates - for example, MS could do a deal with Intel to offer discounts on certain hardware. We have SAAS, so now imagine hardware-as-a-service... - pay an annual fee to have the latest certified Windows 10 compatible hardware.
Windows 10 is where the profit will be, so anything MS can do to get people to move to Win10 is in their interest.
So much opportunity for profit, but also good possibilities for anti-competition fines. Even a few hundred mil in fines would be well worth it from their perspective.

They are playing a dangerous game. With Steam making a push to get Linux gaming working better the number of users MS have a monopoly over is shrinking. For a new build, how many enthusiasts would be happy to spend the ~£100 Windows cost on hardware instead? I'd certainly consider it for my next build.
I'm sure they can 'incentivise' OEMs to continue bundling Windows with most machines but how long before Google makes a play in the low cost area while Apple attacks the high end? The PC market is shrinking anyway and MS aren't really making inroads with tablets/mobile. If Windows + Office is no longer the default for home users it doesn't help the MS negotiating position for the commercial side. I'm sure Google would be happy to attack there as well given half a chance...
This is why Windows 10 should die quickly. Microsoft are getting downright dirty in their ways to get people to upgrade to Windows 10.
Funny, everyone is mad at Microsoft. Why dont you blame apple for not supporting IOS 10 on the IPhone 4s ?
Supporting new hardware in legacy software is development cost - big one.And you will probably find an user hack for that @crackeFishyStuff.com
They are just saying - dont buy new hardware for old software, what is reasonable and make sense.
I am already at windows 10 at all devices, there things i like and things i dont, but overall it is a good system.
Your analogy with Apple is flawed. You are suggesting that Apple should support new software on an old less capable platform which may not be able to run it. Microsoft are preventing the updates (which are available) of older software on new hardware which would be capable of supporting it under normal conditions.

What is it about Linux you don't like? It's not perfect but it might be much better than you think now.
Apple do actually support new software on an old less capable platform, I mean my old 5s has gone from iOS8 > iOS 10 quite happily. All they've done recently is drop support for 32-bit hardware going forward.
But the point you make is still very valid, old software on new hardware shouldn't be an issue, it's simply Microsoft wanting to spend less on development and testing of changes in the OS. There is simply no decent reasoning behind blocking updates beside them saving money.
This is purely a money grab by MS. Any company wanting to tread the line between happy customers & development will support the last 2 or 3 versions of the software, including the company that I develop for.
At this point MS can't afford to upset too many customers with Linux gaining so much ground on them & their lack luster move into the phone & table industry.
Linux is much better than Windows & has long ago become user friendly. You just need to find the flavour (distribution) of Linux that is so you. I have some of my friends and relatives converted to Linux Mint and they love it. Runs way faster than Windows ever did, fewer issues & was easy to learn.
