Re: QOTW: Would you be comfortable using Windows 10 S?

I wasn't interested in Windows RT, I'm not interested in Windows 10S. 10S has even less of a reason to exist than RT did, at least RT was a (supposed) hardware reasoning. What reason is there for 10S? Certainly not security or streamlining.

I wouldn't say no to a Surface tablet, or the Surface Book though. Tying the Surface Tablet to 10S with a "choice" to upgrade isn't an appealing proposition.

Out of the box this does more than a Chromebook just in terms of hardware drivers.

NO!!!! ABSOLUTELY NOT! To many programs i want or need that i cannot get from widows app store. Plus, i would be required to make a microsoft account. I do not want to make a microsoft account so they can spy on me even more. I will stick to local account.

Never. Removing the option of choice for the sake of security is nonsense.

I find the store infuriating. Downloads stop for seemingly no reason and you have to wade through too many "popular" apps to find what you want.

So no. Not even a little bit.

It's fine for the right kind of customer, people who are bad with computers. So it makes sense for those kinds of users.

What MS need to do is go get all the essentials from win32 desktop apps and put them on win store, things like winrar, infraview, windvd, handbrake etc and build up the store front with usable desktop apps.

No - Win32 is what makes me keep windows. Without Win32 (for games) I'd just switch to Linux...

Re: QOTW: Would you be comfortable using Windows 10 S?

Yes of course, seems no less functional than a chromebooks, and I have one of them. I've got no issue with Microsoft going locked down like Google and Apple are. You'd have to be pretty naive to think they'll go purely locked down on all editions, just as Apple found on OSX it doesn't always work.
Plus there a lot of benefits to a locked down PC, say less technologically inclined. As with it being locked down, the stability and reliability *should* go up, I know i've had zero issues with my chromebook and that was one of my reasons for the purchase.

The issue is marketing, I can easily see people buying this (curry's/PC world aren't exactly going to inform are they?) not realising the limitations, esp as it will be cheaper. I kinda wish they didn't call it Windows S, to make it more obvious that it wasn't the same as the other.

    Let me get this straight...

After the failure of Windows RT and the news that Microsoft is/was working on ARM architecture integration in Windows 10 they've now announced what is essentially a new version of Windows RT called Windows 10 S? Does the "S" stand for Stupid?

There's not a chance I'd ever use something like this. What a horrible limitation! Perhaps hard-core Microsoft fans might like it, but otherwise it makes it a pretty useless operating system.

Re: QOTW: Would you be comfortable using Windows 10 S?

Microsoft is going too much the wrong way, win 10 is already feeling as a cage where you constant get bugged or hindered by the crap software of microsoft itself. IE and Edge still are the most unsafe browsers on the planet.. the 30 year old security problem is still in these browsers.
The constant nagging that you should try their crap annoys me so much that i already am thinking of switching to apple or linux. Every time i open a document or music its whining that there is no program connected that extension.. unless its one of microsofts own crappy products.
Win 10 is waht win 7 allways had to be in terms of stability, but the endless spyware and the control they have over everyone is beyong healthy. Its just win7 with a new shell and some fixes they should have done 10 years ago. In general the only thing they care about by M$ is how the crap looks. That 30 year old bugs still am in the products they do not care about. Hell no they just promote the crap.
Who in his right mind chooses a crippled product which has to work with the unbelievable stupid winstore is asking for having to pay for the upgrade anyway. The winstore i freaking delete it on every system i own i DO NEVER USE APPS and never will use that stupid tiles ever. Yes indeed they are stupid, especially on a desktop pc, hell even on kinda all laptops its useless crap simply because about 85% of the used laptops do not have touch screens. But M$ wants people to use that silly crap. And do not get me started on cortana.... another fail from this oh so smart company. Yes it annoys me that useless crap, do not change something which was working well. But noooo they have to change the appearance again instead of fixing the problems which are often 30 years old or more.

Now, I'm not a computer expert in any way by any means, here.... and I don't know what I may or may not inadvertently have done to my system.... but I don't get a single one of these issues that you lot are always complaining about.

Everything works fine, no-one pesters me to buy anything or update anything I haven't asked (and all my apps ask, rather than auto-downloading and auto-updating).... Maybe I'm just lucky?

According to this article on ZDNet Microsoft don't allow other browsers or apps that browse the web to use any other HTML and JavaScript engines other than those built into Windows so i guess that means the likes of Firefox, Chrome, Steam, and any other apps that use things like the Chromium Embedded Framework would be banned from the Windows Store and by extensions 10S.

Apparently a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that policy in a statement today:
Windows Store apps that browse the web must use HTML and JavaScript engines provided by the Windows Platform. All Windows Store content is certified by Microsoft to help ensure a quality experience and keep your devices safer. With this policy, instated early this year, the browser a customer chooses in the Store will ensure the protections and safeguards of our Windows platform. If people would like to access apps from other stores and services, they can switch to Windows 10 Pro at any time.
