Definitely not. Linux based systems are way better & don't force you to pay if you want to use other companies software. If I pay for a device I own it & should be able to put whatever I like on it ... as long as it doesn't break any laws of course

Depends on the device though. Most modern appliances have some form of embedded processor in them that runs software, but you buy a device to do a function - not many people hack their washing machine operating system.
So if you regard a chrome Book/surface with windows s as a composite product with an embedded operating system that allows you to run certain programs, it becomes a product - like a games console is designed for playing games.
With that perspective, it makes quite good sense for Microsoft - as it has for Apple.

If they do a good job of it and add some features that my Chromebook doesn't have then sure. I can see it being hampered in some way though and Google have the first mover market advantage with Chrome OS right now.
i really like the formfactor and look just locked down os no skype or chrome...ridiculous
I just want a win 10 64bit pro that works without all the crap Microsoft THINKS we want
there should be options to chose weather you want to install the likes of the Cortana crap
and the Edge browser more crap.
