I'm sorry but I did have to lol a little bit. I've heard how bad the IT departments are and this kinda confirms it
Re: Ransomware Wanna Decryptor causing IT failures across NHS
It looks like Spain has also been hit by the same attack, so this is quite a bit more widespread than originally thought.

How stupid do you have to be to do this getting on the craplist of just about every intelligence agency everywhere. Trying to extort money but instead throwing your whole life away for nothing.

It's nice they also decided to target a service which will affect I'll patients too. Perhaps they think the NHS data is important enough that they'll get the ransom.

DBAN all the PC's and servers
Image them using SCCM
Restore data from backup
About a week's job, Could be done over the weekend with a lot of manpower.

It's not really the IT dept's fault when you have moron end users clicking links in random emails, they just have to fix the mess.

Sorry, but I struggle to see the funny side when the health of patients is put at risk.

Seems the best way round it, If my PC was hit with such a thing my plan would be offer them £2 on the basis of saving my some time and if they refuse just nuke and restore.
I will say this is why I always unplug my backup drive when not in use, wouldn't be much use if that got encrypted too.

can someone explain how is bitcoin any better than cash if it allows criminals to use it out of reach of law enforcement, just like cash
Re: Ransomware Wanna Decryptor causing IT failures across NHS
Timed to strike on friday? Shouldn't be hard to code it to read the system clock and activate just after IT workers typically clock off

The appeal of crpytocurrencies for so many is it takes control away from governments whom they view as the real troublemakers. There is, of course, another side to the (crypto) coin which they don't consider till they can't unlock their laptop.

Except that it is still tied to 'real' currencies so it has volatility, but can be used for other criminal use.
Perhaps your statement should be

And it's not really the moron end users fault that they have outdated system, didn't this only work because many NHS trusts are still running XP?

Maybe, although I see that MS have released a patch for an unsupported system to fix this - a bit late perhaps but better late than never.
But I would expect many of the NHS systems to be bespoke and maybe not able to run on later systems, so not only would the NHS be forced to upgrade the operating system, but then update the systems to run on it. NHS IT systems don't have a great implementation track record, so I can understand a reluctance to upgrade.
At the risk of being controversial, is Microsoft's position a bit ransomewareish "upgrade to Windows - or leave your systems vulnerable because we aren't going to support it".
Re: Ransomware Wanna Decryptor causing IT failures across NHS
Yea i heard something about that, IDK if it was released before or after event but either way the cause of this is more complicated than moron end user, bad IT, evil Microsoft, or any other single point of failure, it's a series of failures.
Having said that I'd personally attribute it mostly to a lack of money, throwing money at problems while perhaps not very cost effective tends to get them solved.
