Why is there $200 price difference?

Gsync requires proprietary NVidia hardware to do its refresh rate voodoo. Freesync requires nothing more than normal monitor hardware and a little firmware tweaking.
Edit: I suppose there's also the concept that there are more NVidia users out there right now thanks to Pascal success and they're clearly OK with spending a bit more, so why not charge more for a compatible display? Cash in on the closed environment.

Until they sort out this divided mess that we have with the "sync" screens, I will be sticking to good old 60hz, I refuse to pay out so much more on a monitor just because I own an Nvidia card.

Re: Alienware 25-inch gaming monitor has a native 240Hz refresh rate
"$699"
No way. Never. Not for a screen that small. I don't care what 'marketing' tries to tell me I need. We're buying the same crap over and over again and only getting small advancements. Grrr. By now ALL screens should be 4k running at 100Hz so we've at least advanced a small amount.

It makes more sense to me to just buy a card that can deliver the FPS I want, or adjust settings to suit. The "sync" technology just seems to me as a way of squeezing a bit more life out of a GPU, but the premium you have to pay you may as well put in to a card upgrade.

$500-700 for a 1080p TN display? What are they smoking?

With AMD you get a full graphics card with all the required hardware to control a panel.
Nvidia simply lacks the hardware to do it via the GPU and so you have to purchase the missing hardware everytime you purchase a monitor.

Much Mirth was had (agreed)
For the difference in price you can pay 50-100 dollars more than the gsync version and upgrade your gpu and screen to match the required specs!

Just G-Sync royalties... FU NVidia!
Re: Alienware 25-inch gaming monitor has a native 240Hz refresh rate
Seriously only 1080 on a 25" screen for that price, talk about ripping people off!

You don't need g-sync for a high refresh rate monitor, freesync monitors work perfectly fine with nvidia cards. The variable refresh won't be enabled, but it'll still provide 120Hz or whatever it's rated for
Re: Alienware 25-inch gaming monitor has a native 240Hz refresh rate
That's a disgustingly high price for a screen that's only 25" and 1080p. It should be at least 27" and 2560x1440 for that price. They have to be having a laugh.
Re: Alienware 25-inch gaming monitor has a native 240Hz refresh rate
Buy Freesync, you'll still get to use the max refresh rate. And if Gsync monitor sales fall, Nvidia would be forced to support the free and open source FreeSync. Win win for all!

this is why i like this site.
just about anywhere else this discussion would have broken down into an amd vs nvidia fanboy free-for-all with tempers flaring and insults thick in the air.
of course this shows that the forumites here are of a very high order, and i am pleased to have their company. well done all.
