Re: Lenovo teases future flexible screen laptop design

At some technology show, some company showed some concept product featuring a bendable screen... I have yet to get my hands on any product with a bendable screen.
Any bets that I'll still be making these same posts in another 5 years?

Seriously, companies keep showing these things off as the future, just around the corner, and they never materialise in the shops!!
Good job no game developer behaves like that.... oh, wait, Star Citizen... yeah.

wow Lenovo shows a concept laptop with a design that's basically been going round for decades... I know it was pretty common 'idea' at my uni when I was doing product design.

Thanks to the minimum radius, you end up with something substantially larger than competing ultraportable laptops when folded. The extra screen size looks useful though

I'd be more interested if they could make the keyboard flexible too, so you could roll it into a tube - useful for tucking away into the corner of a bag, rather than needing a large flat space...

"and they never materialise in the shops!!"

There's no need as the cost to make them is still too high. It's all about the mild upgrades, year on year, to ensure the max $$$$$. We could be far, far more advanced if it were not for $$$$.

While I'm sure there will be more practical solutions, this doesn't look very good to me. I don't really see any advantage over a laptop and it will probably just add cost. The only way I could see the curved part of the screen being ideal is if it was used as something that showed other information, notifications or a quick launch area rather than extending the screen at an awkward angle.

but why? do people actually want this ? (I know I don't).

just because it can be made doesn't mean you have to make it , take windows 8 for example!.

    This exact thing, no...

But my favourite phone was a Samsung SGH Z500-V. It was tiny. It could fit in the watch pocket of my jeans. It was a flip phone with camera front and rear, large screen inside and small clock/image display on the outside. I played games on it (Splinter Cell was awesome), played music, did all sorts.

I only upgraded because modern texts had too many characters. But by this stage, phones had started to get larger.
I never really had a phone as a phone, preferring to buy PDAs that had phones built in and only recently got a Samsung Galaxy.
At one stage people had phones that were about the size of a 7" Tablet, slapped on the side of their heads!!

Even today, phones are massive, thin, easily breakable slabs of glass.
What we really want is a large usable screen than rolls up or retracts away into something the size of my first Samsung. This is the tech to do it and concept/proof of models have already been exhibited a few years ago.

You could extend the screen all the way and have an on-screen keyboard, but not on a thinkpad. It should be possible to simulate the nub mouse with one of those imitation touchscreen joysticks you get on some mobile games, but I can't see a typical thinkpad user wanting it
