I like how the Scotland-Wales route gives the whole of Wales a wide berth and only makes the short hop from Bristol to Cardiff right at the end.

Don't worry about the routes, the likelihood of this being built are likely on a par with that of electric trains running down through Somerset, Devon and Cornwall at 200mph, before I'm in my grave (I'm 52).

That's what they said about SpaceX haha. But tbh, I agree. Not because of funding or technology, but governments won't want to be embarrassed by it. Especially the UK gov and the epic fail that is HS2.

Re: Hyperloop One reveals its plans for connecting Europe

Well the only other place in Wales that might be worth while is Swansea.

But I don't see this happening purely from planning. Building a big floating pipeline across the British countryside? Never gonna happen.

..even if those areas were given the option of such a transport network, the tourist & heritage NIMBYS would kill it stone dead.

I can't really see the commercial point in a superfast train that only carries cargo for the first few years. Who'd want to pay that much for transport in an hour when you could courier it for next day delivery instead?

I'd assume for Musk and co it won't be about profit at this stage. It would be about testing 1000s of times in a real world scenario without human life at risk.

    Que?

(I hope all rail systems have a retarding system to prevent them passing danger signals or colliding with each other - in fact I go so far as to say it's an essential safety measure)

Re: Hyperloop One reveals its plans for connecting Europe

Because the British NIMBYs are going to embrace a pair of metal tubes going through the countryside near their houses. Although the eastern route they've picked is more viable, if they build it over the M11, A14, etc.

OTOH maybe they'll finish this before HS2, which would be a hoot.

(note: it's not going to happen)

I love that people think a near vacuum tube spanning hundreds, possibly thousands of miles is a concept that will work in our lifetimes. A single tiny rupture would bring the entire "loop" to a halt.

Halt is a bit of an understatement, a breach would rip the tube in half and the air rushing in would obliterate an inbound train.
